Povlja brings together early Christian architecture and written records with coves, swimming, diving and hiking.

Early Christian architecture and historical records

The remains of the early Christian basilica lie beside the parish church of St John the Baptist and date from the 5th and 6th centuries. The early Christian church had three naves and was designed in the style of a classical Roman basilica. One particularly distinctive feature is the baptistery: it is octagonal inside and square outside. It has been preserved up to the top of its pyramid-shaped roof and is considered a rarity of late antique religious architecture. A cross-shaped baptismal font has also been preserved in the floor.

The village’s later history can also be read in its buildings. A Benedictine monastery stood on the site of the early Christian church until around 1350. A later addition above the old early Christian apse was a fortified tower with battlements. The basilica, baptistery and tower thus point to different architectural and historical layers that can be seen side by side in Povlja.

The Povaljski prag is among the written records. It is considered the oldest written monument of Croatian Church Slavonic in Cyrillic script. The inscription was carved shortly after 1184 into the lintel of the Abbey of St John the Baptist in Povlja. The Povaljska listina is another important linguistic record: it is one of the oldest texts in the Croatian language and a parchment copy of a property document from the cartulary of the Benedictine monastery of St John the Baptist in Povlja. Together, an inscription on a lintel and a surviving property document represent different forms of written transmission.

Coves, hiking and regional cuisine

Povlja has numerous coves used for sunbathing and swimming. Diving is also available as a sport and leisure activity. These waterside options offer a different focus from the historic buildings: when planning your trip, you can combine culture and outdoor activities without treating them as the same experience.

Via Brattia, a circular hiking trail about 140 kilometres long, passes through Povlja. It is marked in both directions. As trail markers and conditions can change, check the information before setting out. Restaurants in Povlja serve fresh fish specialities with homemade wines. Local food thus adds another element to a stay that also offers hiking and swimming.

Cultural insights in Općina Selca

The wider destination of Općina Selca has other distinct cultural highlights. In Selca, the Church of Christ the King houses a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus created by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was Selca’s first parish church and was built in the 18th century in the lower part of the town square. These examples belong to Selca and should be distinguished from the early Christian buildings in Povlja.

Selca’s town square is also home to a Poets’ Wall, with stone plaques dedicated to poets who receive a poetry award at the annual poetry evening “Ča, kaj, što”. The literary event Croatia rediviva Ča-kaj-što has been held in Selca since 1991. It is based on the principle of a threefold nature and the unifying power of the Croatian language. For choosing where to stay, these themes offer an additional cultural connection within Općina Selca, while Povlja’s own highlights are its early Christian architecture, written records and waterside activities.
