Selca combines a townscape shaped by stone with historic churches and literary heritage. The town’s history offers concrete themes to help you plan your stay: stonemasonry, religious buildings, literature and routes through the landscape.

Stone Architecture and Local History

Almost all houses in Selca are built entirely of stone. Trg Stjepana Radića, known locally as Pijaca, is a cultural and historical monument to the stonemasonry craft. The Palac, also known as the Štambuk family palace, was built in 1869 by three merchant brothers; its stones are joined without visible seams. Selca thus features both stonemasonry as the subject of a cultural monument and a specific form of stone construction that can be seen in the building itself.

Didolića dvori is a 19th-century house built by the influential Didolić family. The Slovak writer Martin Kukučin lived there. The site thus connects a historic residence with a literary legacy; Tolstoy Park was laid out in 1910.

Churches and Their Different Connections

The pre-Romanesque Church of St. Nedilja stands on Gradac Hill, below a prehistoric hillfort. The Church of St. Nicholas dates from the 11th to 12th century and is considered one of the most important medieval monuments on Brač. The Church of St. Thomas is situated on a hill above the hamlet of Nadsela, on the road from Gornji Humac to Selca. The locations, dates and historical contexts of the three churches distinguish them from one another and provide different spatial and temporal reference points for the town’s history.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Općina Selca

In the wider destination of Općina Selca, other cultural sites also reflect Selca’s history. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was Selca’s first parish church and was built in the lower part of the town square in the 18th century. The Church of Christ the King in Selca houses a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, created by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. On the town square, the Poets’ Wall features stone plaques for poets who received awards at the annual poetry evening “Ča, kaj, što”. The linguistic and literary event Croatia rediviva Ča-kaj-što has been held in Selca since 1991; it is based on the principle of the threefold nature and the unifying power of the Croatian language. Immediately after the death of Leo Tolstoy, the world’s first monument dedicated to him was erected in Selca. Cycling and Hiking Routes

The cycling network of Općina Selca connects Selca, Sumartin, Povlja and Novo Selo. The routes pass through olive groves, lead to viewpoints and cross historic landscapes. A public information board near the church displays hiking and cycling maps for Selca. If you plan to use this overview, check the current display arrangements on site as needed.

Via Brattia also runs through the wider destination of Općina Selca: the 140-kilometre circular hiking trail passes through Sumartin and Povlja and connects numerous settlements on Brač as well as twelve cultural and historical sites. This means that a cycling network linking four named places and an island-wide circular hike offer different ways to explore. Before setting out on a hike, check local trail conditions and signage.
