Culture and history in Supetar
The Ivan Rendić Gallery is located in Supetar’s public library. It was founded to mark the sculptor’s 150th birthday. The Ivan Rendić Memorial Collection comprises 20 sculptures, 50 original projects and designs, as well as numerous photographs and documents. The exhibition arrangements and presentation of the collection may change. Rendić’s legacy can also be seen at other sites: Supetar’s parish church was built in 1604 on the foundations of an earlier basilica; nearby is an early Christian mosaic dating from the 6th century.
At the entrance to Supetar cemetery are the remains of a 6th-century Roman villa rustica. Fourteen tomb monuments in the cemetery were created by sculptor Ivan Rendić (1849–1932). The cemetery is also home to the Petrinović family mausoleum, a work by Tomo Rosandić. The “Dan s Rendićem” cultural walk passes through the oldest historic areas of the old town, visiting places where Rendić left his mark. It ends at the cemetery, where Ivan Rendić’s grave and several of his works can be seen. The walk’s digital features may change.
The public bathhouse Banj is another historic detail in the island’s story: it was the first public bathhouse on the entire island of Brač and could accommodate 150 bathers. Vela Luka is one of Supetar’s beaches. Supetar thus offers a range of starting points for a trip focused on culture, the coast and local history.
Trails of different lengths
The Via Brattia is an approximately 140-kilometre circular hiking trail that passes through Supetar. It is marked in both directions and can be started in Supetar. The also-circular Camino Brač is 150 kilometres long, runs across the island, and starts and ends in Supetar. The Via Brattia passes through Supetar and can be started there; Supetar is both the starting point and the finish for the Camino Brač.
Nearby, the five-kilometre circular Olive Trail runs through the olive groves above Mirca to Prihodi. At five kilometres, the Olive Trail is considerably shorter than the two long island routes. Trail conditions may change. Prihodi is an old irrigation system that was historically connected to Mirca’s water supply. The route and landscape therefore point to different aspects of the area: olive growing and the former water supply.
The trail from Supetar towards Vidova gora leads to Trolokve, a place with three watering points. If you’re interested in the landscape and how it has been used, this route adds another specific destination to the historic sites and trails through the olive groves. In Supetar, visitors can also rent a boat and take trips along the Brač Channel to quiet coves. Rental options and operating conditions may vary.
