Discover Donji Zvečaj
Accommodation in Donji Zvečaj
Donji Zvečaj is suited to travelers who want to consider both local history and time in nature when choosing a destination. The village is home to the single-nave Chapel of St. John the Baptist; the surrounding area offers routes for walks through nature. The Mrežnica is a draw for river-related activities: swimming in the warmer months, as well as kayaking and rafting. When planning your stay, it is worth considering these themes according to their respective focus and deciding on the emphasis of your visit accordingly.
The Chapel of St. John the Baptist
The chapel was built in 1693 on the site of a wooden chapel dating from 1673. Its construction history can therefore be understood in several stages: the earlier wooden building was followed by the chapel, whose bell tower was added in 1741. Three valuable Late Renaissance altars, dated 1687 to 1689, are preserved in the chapel. Their creation thus predates the construction of the chapel in 1693. The term “single-nave” also describes the building: it refers to a church with one main nave. For travelers interested in culture, this provides a clear timeline of the predecessor building, chapel, altars, and bell tower, without conflating these distinct construction phases.

The river and activities on the Mrežnica
The Mrežnica is characterized by numerous waterfalls and turquoise water; its appearance and conditions may vary seasonally. The river is considered suitable for swimming in the warmer months. If you plan to swim, check the conditions in advance. Kayaking and rafting are available on the Mrežnica. Local operators also offer kayak rentals and organized tours. When planning, it makes a difference whether you are looking for kayak rentals, an organized tour, or rafting: these are different types of offerings. If you want to make a tour a firm part of your plans, check the operators’ current offerings.
Landscape protection and geographic scope
Landscape protection designations also differ in their geographic scope and status. On March 7, 2024, Karlovac County designated the lower course of the Mrežnica in Duga Resa as the protected Mrežnica Significant Landscape; the decision was published on April 30, 2024. The boundary of the proposed Mrežnica Significant Landscape area was published in 2024. Its status is proposed. The two designations should therefore not be conflated: the first concerns the designated landscape along the lower river course in Duga Resa, while the second concerns the cadastral area of Donji Zvečaj within a proposed area. This distinction helps place the local and landscape references accurately.
