Gornje Mrzlo Polje Mrežničko: Hiking towards Vinica
Accommodation in Gornje Mrzlo Polje Mrežničko
When planning a trip to Gornje Mrzlo Polje Mrežničko, you can consider an archaeological site and excursions towards Vinica. Pod Rogancem is located in the village and is designated as a protected archaeological area. Two different routes to Vinica and a canoe route in the Duga Resa area are also worth considering when planning your day: the times given refer to different routes and activities.
Pod Rogancem and its local significance
The spatial plan of the City of Duga Resa designates Pod Rogancem in Gornje Mrzlo Polje Mrežničko as a protected archaeological area. This gives the place a cultural and historical point of interest alongside the trip’s nature and hiking attractions. Those interested in archaeology can take this into account when choosing a destination.
The Mrežnica as a natural area
Within the City of Duga Resa, the lower stretch of the Mrežnica River is part of the Mrežnica Protected Landscape. The protected area covers 1,401.79 hectares. There are 29 travertine barriers within the protected area; the Mrežnica as a whole has more than 90 travertine waterfalls. These figures therefore refer to different geographical units: the barriers are within the protected area, while the number of waterfalls refers to the river.
The karst area includes caves, sinkholes, and other underground features. The Mrežnica is also an important habitat for the strictly protected stone crayfish and noble crayfish. In addition, six fish species endemic to the Danube Basin occur in the Mrežnica area. Alongside its travertine formations, this protected river landscape offers geological and ecological points of interest that can shape a stay in the wider region.
Hiking routes and trails towards Vinica
There are two different hiking routes to Vinica starting from Mrzlo Polje. The approach via Belajske Poljice takes about one hour and 15 minutes. A section of the Four Karlovac Rivers Trail also leads from Mrzlo Polje to Vinica, but goes via Mrežnički Most and takes one hour and 30 minutes. Because they pass through different intermediate points, these times refer to different routes and are not two options for the same route.
The Four Karlovac Rivers Trail can be completed in sections and can also be cycled in dry weather. Around Duga Resa, options also include Šetalište Tušmer on Vinica for walks and cycling routes along the Mrežnica. The Mladen Polović mountain lodge is located near Vinica and is managed by HPD Vinica from Duga Resa.
Canoe trip on the Mrežnica
A tourist canoe route around Duga Resa follows approximately eight kilometres of the Mrežnica. Allow about three to five hours, depending on swimming and rest breaks. The route passes around ten travertine barriers. Children can take part when accompanied by a parent. Breaks affect how long the trip takes, so the time range is a useful guide for planning your day, not a fixed duration for every outing.
