Karlovac between River Landscapes and the Old Town

Karlovac combines river landscapes and urban heritage with museums, historic buildings and walking trails. The city’s oldest district is Zvijezda. It is bounded by defensive moats, and remnants of a stone wall have been preserved. In the city centre, you can discover a history that is also reflected in Karlovac’s cultural sites.

Aquatika is dedicated to the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, their geological history, traditional culture and the history of Karlovac’s four river basins. The layout of the basins also reflects the river theme: it follows the course of a typical karst river and illustrates its journey from source to mouth.

Trails along the Kupa

A historic walking trail connects Dubovac Castle, the fortified old town of Zvijezda, 19th-century parks and Aquatika. It follows a tree-shaded promenade and the banks of the Kupa before continuing through the old town centre and Vrbanić Gardens. The route thus links historic sites and green spaces with the riverbank.

The Kupa Promenade is about ten kilometres long. Allow around two hours for the easy walk; walking time may vary depending on trail conditions. Hiking symbols and directional signs mark the route. If you are interested in a longer riverside walk, this provides clear information on the distance, estimated time and trail markers.

The Kupa and Korana are in the city centre. The Mrežnica and Dobra rivers, farther out of town, can be reached by car or bicycle during a short visit. Foginovo is described as Croatia’s first registered river bathing area. Two major national cycling tourism routes also pass through Karlovac.

Historic Buildings and Culture

A museum exhibition is housed in the Branič Tower of Stari grad Dubovac Castle. Kino Edison also brings together city history and a cultural programme: built specifically as a cinema in 1920, the building is considered a cultural monument of Karlovac and is among the oldest of its kind in Croatia. Kino Edison is also considered Croatia’s first VR cinema. Its programme includes educational VR and documentary films and may change.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is considered a monument of national importance. Together with the Franciscan monastery, it forms a historic and cultural complex that has been administered by Franciscans since the 17th century. The monastery houses the Museum of Sacred Heritage, with 10,000 rare books and sacred art objects. The Franciscan Museum is closed for renovation until further notice.

The Karlovac–Turanj Homeland War Museum is located in the Turanj district, in a former Austrian barracks. It adds another chapter in Karlovac’s history to the city’s historic and cultural sites.

Parks and Seasonal Cuisine

Vrbanić Park was designed as a small open-air botanical garden and has been open to the public since 1896. It is also one of the stops on the historic walking trail. Exploring the city on foot, you can link the park with the old town centre and other historic sites.

Local restaurants offer seasonal themed dishes. These include fish and beer dishes, as well as meals featuring strawberries, mushrooms or chestnuts. Which dishes are on the menu depends on the season and the restaurant, so the selection should not be considered available year-round.

Getting There and Choosing a Hotel

Passenger trains stop at Karlovac Centar railway station. The station is in the city centre, opposite Karlovac bus station. The bus station is also centrally located; the historic old town of Zvijezda is about a five-minute walk away. If your arrival depends on the train, check the current timetable in advance.

When looking for a hotel in Karlovac, you can start by deciding what matters most during your stay: the old town and culture, trails along the Kupa, or the rivers farther out of town. If you plan to include the MreĹľnica and Dobra in a short visit, allow for travel by car or bicycle.
