Plasi: Ruins of a Fortified Town

The ruins of the probably medieval fortified town of Plasi stand on Plaška Glava above Plaški, at 635 metres above sea level. A central round tower and parts of the defensive walls remain. Plasi and Plaški therefore do not refer to the same place: Plasi is the fortified town, while Plaški is the settlement above which the ruins lie. This distinction helps with orientation when exploring the history around Plaški. The location and elevation provide two different kinds of context: the location describes the ruins’ relationship to the settlement, while 635 metres provides a specific elevation. The round tower and parts of the defensive walls draw attention to the architectural remains. If you are interested in historic fortifications, you can focus on the central tower and the remains of the defensive walls.

Church and the History of Education

The Cathedral of the Presentation of the Mother of God is approximately 260 years old and was once the seat of the Eparchy of Upper Karlovac. Its age provides an approximate timeframe; its former function adds an ecclesiastical perspective. The former school building, Učiona, offers a different point of interest: Nikola Tesla’s father and uncle were educated there. Učiona is a protected cultural asset. Different historical connections come together here: the cathedral’s former ecclesiastical function and the history of education associated with the school and Tesla’s father and uncle. The protected status applies to the Učiona building itself; the biographical connection comes from the education of the two men. This allows the history of the church and the history of education to be considered as separate perspectives.

Pottery Using Traditional Techniques

Atelje Janja Gora offers visitors pottery experiences using traditional decoration and firing methods. Participants can take their finished work home. The experience therefore includes both the craft techniques and the finished result: decoration concerns the design, while firing is part of the production process. Those interested in applied crafts can connect the activity with the finished piece they have made. Booking arrangements may change, so check the terms of participation in advance.

The Dretulja and Vrelo Dretulje

The Dretulja is a karst sinking river, and Vrelo Dretulje is its spring. The spring is described as clear, fresh, fast-flowing, and cold. The two names help distinguish the river from its source: Dretulja refers to the river and its karst character, while Vrelo Dretulje refers to the spring. The characteristics also describe different impressions: clarity and freshness characterize the spring, fast-flowing describes its movement, and cold its temperature. Thus, the description of the river complements that of the spring without treating them as the same thing. If you are interested in bodies of water and landscapes, you will find both a karst river and a spring with specifically described features here.
