Klanjec lies on elevated ground below Mount Cesarska gora, which is 511 metres high. The Cesarska gora area in Klanjec is part of the protected landscape of significance Zelenjak–Risvička i Cesarska gora. If you are considering Klanjec as a destination, you can choose from a range of interests, including scenery and hiking trails, sacred history, sculpture and wine.

Hiking trails and scenery

The Klanjec–Cesargrad hiking trail is 2.4 kilometres long. Its elevation difference is 210 metres, and its highest point is at 459 metres. The ruins of Cesargrad can be reached from Klanjec via this trail. The route thus combines a specific trail length with the destination of a medieval fortress ruin.

The Eko staza Cesarskom gorom is shorter, at 1.3 kilometres. It connects trails and raises awareness of ecological issues. Comparing the two descriptions can help you get your bearings: the Klanjec–Cesargrad hiking trail is longer and has a stated elevation difference, while the Eko staza is described in terms of trail connections and its ecological purpose.

The Planinarska kuća Cesargrad serves as a rest stop for visitors and is managed by HPD Cesargrad Klanjec. A woodland promenade leads to the Chapel of St Florian. These trails and sites add other outdoor destinations to the views of Cesargrad.

Fortress, monastery and art

Cesargrad is a medieval fortress dating from the mid-14th century. It stands on Cesarska gora above the Sutla Valley and present-day Klanjec. Another historical highlight is the complex comprising the Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Annunciation, built by Nikola and Sigismund Erdody between 1630 and 1686.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of Croatia’s first early Baroque sacred monuments and serves as the Erdödy family mausoleum. Two restored sarcophagi of the Erdody family are also on display in the Franciscan monastery. Visits to the monastery and church must be arranged in advance with the Klanjec Cultural Centre. The Antun Augustincic Gallery is a sculpture museum in Klanjec that preserves and exhibits works by Antun Augustincic. The Spomen-park znamenitih Klanjčana keeps the memory of three other notable figures alive: the memorial park is on the site of the former cemetery and preserves the graves of Antun Mihanović, Oton Iveković and Krsto Iveković. A Calvary also stands on the hill beside the Chapel of St Florian.

A further historical landmark lies five kilometres south of Klanjec: Novi Dvori Cesargradski was built by Toma Erdody in 1603. Together with the fortress and monastery complex, this site reflects the different historical highlights you can discover during a stay in the area.

Sokol wine and choosing your stay

Sokol is an indigenous Muscat grape variety that grows on the slopes of Cesarska gora near Klanjec. You can sample Sokol wine at two wineries in Klanjec: Trs Sever and Vina Petrišić. This wine tradition adds a specific local dimension to the hiking and cultural highlights.

If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Klanjec, choose according to the focus of your trip: trails and fortress ruins, sacred architectural history, sculpture or a Sokol wine tasting. This can help you decide whether Klanjec suits the interests you want to prioritise on your trip.
