Several cultural themes come together in Krapina: Neanderthal history, archaeological traces, art, and recurring events. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on museums and archaeological sites, art and architectural history, or a festival. The different places and programs offer a range of ways to explore Krapina.

Ljudevit Gaj and Neanderthal History

The Ljudevit Gaj Museum is located in Gaj’s birthplace at 14 Gajeva Street. Exhibits include historic furniture, portraits of Gaj and his family, and reproductions of manuscripts and printed works. Books, brochures, newspapers, and magazines connected with Gaj’s work are also on display. Personal belongings and written records are presented side by side.

The museum offers expert-guided tours in Croatian and English by prior arrangement. Combined tours include both the permanent exhibition and the Hušnjakovo excavation site. A forest trail connects the Krapina Neanderthal Museum with the site. If you would like to explore both aspects, this connection and the option of a combined tour are useful points of reference; tours must be arranged in advance.

The Krapina Neanderthal was discovered at Hušnjakovo in 1899. The site has been protected as Croatia’s first paleontological natural monument since 1961. About 900 human fossil bones were found there. The site thus connects the actual discovery with its significance for Croatia’s paleontological history.

Hušnjakovo and Its Stops

The Hušnjakovo trail includes eight interpretation points. Features along the route include interactive panels, a geological column, a cave, and a time-machine slide. The trail complements the site’s historical significance with a variety of interpretive and experiential stops. When planning your visit, you can choose between the guided connection to the museum exhibition and the trail with its interpretive features.

Art, Architecture, and History

Forma Prima is an open-air park at Josipovac with more than 30 large wooden sculptures. The site is registered as a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. Another focus on history is Stari grad Krapina, regarded as one of Croatia’s oldest fortified medieval towns. Archaeological research there uncovered the ground plan of a presumed court chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

Krapina’s gallery is also housed in a historic building: it is located in a 19th-century Neoclassical house. Its collections of contemporary art, as well as the collections associated with Ernest Tomašević and Vjekoslav Rukljač, are registered as Croatian cultural assets; they were registered in 2011. The Franciscan monastery, in turn, houses a rare collection of sacred art and a library founded in 1650. Concerts by singers and musicians are held in the Church of St. Catherine; specific concert dates are not set out here.

Events and Travel Dates

Recurring annual events include Krapinafest, a festival of sacred music organized by the Franciscans. The specific dates vary from year to year. The GlumaÄŤki Festival in Krapina takes place every year over three weekends after Easter. If you would like to combine your trip with one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year before setting your travel dates.

Tjedan kajkavske kulture includes programs from several cultural fields, not just Kajkavian singing. For eventgoers, the Festivalska dvorana is in central Krapina, near a large visitor car park. Art and architectural history, archaeological themes, and festival programs each offer a different focus for your stay. Which ones fit your travel dates depends mainly on whether you are targeting a specific event period or want to focus on the museums, archaeological sites, and collections.
