Prozor: Hillforts, Roman-era remains and routes to Prozorina
Accommodation in Prozor
Prozor combines historic sites with practical topics for planning a trip: the Mali Vital and Veliki Vital hillforts, the Roman municipium of Arupium, the climbs to Prozorina and the fishing areas along the Gacka. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Prozor, you can choose your focus based on whether you are primarily interested in the archaeological remains, a climb or the river.
Archaeological remains near Prozor
Near Prozor are the Mali Vital and Veliki Vital hillforts, with the remains of a fortified Japodian settlement from the Early and Late Iron Ages. At the foot of the hillforts are graves containing rich grave goods made of bronze, amber, glass and other archaeological finds. These finds give a visit to the two hillforts a distinct historical focus.
The remains of the Roman municipium of Arupium lie on the northern slope of the Veliki Vital hillfort. The Roman site includes residential and commercial buildings, a small thermal complex with mosaics and frescoes, and funerary monuments. An ancient quarry and two mithraea are also nearby. The Iron Age remains and Roman ruins thus represent different historical contexts in Prozor.
The Church of the Holy Cross in Prozor also connects local history with ancient traces: it was built in 1794 using stones from a Roman temple of Priapus. Two Latin inscriptions on limestone bases are set into the arch between the nave and the sanctuary. The church therefore offers a different way to explore history than the remains of the hillforts and the municipium.
Climbs to Prozorina
The first climb to Prozorina starts in Prozor, at the Mate Kostelac Maljutka Community Centre. A second climb starts at the Orišković Bridge, Bridge 4, and takes about 45 minutes. The Prozorina trails were marked by the Gromovača mountaineering club. The two climbs can therefore be distinguished by their starting points; the approximate duration applies to the route starting at the bridge.
Fishing areas along the Gacka
Fishing areas B and C can be distinguished by their endpoints. Area B runs from the Tončin Bridge in Čovići to the Stanišić Bridge in Prozor. Area C extends from the Stanišić Bridge to the confluence of the Gacka and Lika rivers at the Poljica Tunnel. The Stanišić Bridge is therefore a shared landmark: it marks the end of area B and the start of area C. If fishing on the Gacka is part of your plans, check the current local regulations.
More to explore in the wider region
The Barkanova Trail runs through the wider region. It is a 42.6-kilometre cycling route described as moderately difficult. Length and difficulty are two separate details to consider when assessing the route. The trail complements the hiking routes to Prozorina with an option for travellers interested in cycling routes as well.
Also in the wider region, OPG Sekula Lucija grows blackberries, raspberries, aronia, strawberries, other fruit and some vegetables. Products made from the produce are sold at the farm, which also has a small tasting area. The farm’s offerings may vary by season. Thus, the regional overview includes not only historic sites and trails, but also a glimpse of local cultivation and the products made from it.
