Seline lies between a pebble beach and the Mala Paklenica gorge. This gives the area a mix of coastal and gorge landscapes, as well as paths to Starigrad and historic traces of water supply and building history. If you’re looking for hotels in Seline, it helps to consider in advance whether landscapes, paths or cultural heritage will shape your stay.

Mala Paklenica and access to the national park

Entrance 2 of Paklenica National Park is in Seline, in front of the Mala Paklenica gorge. The gorge is known for its wilderness and well-preserved nature. Its rock walls are up to 300 metres high, and some sections are no more than 10 metres wide. High rock walls and narrow passages together define the scale of the canyon.

Tickets purchased at Entrance 2 are valid for Entrance 1 of the national park. As ticket arrangements may change, check them before your visit. Reception opening hours may also vary by season, so take this into account when planning.

Paths between Seline and Starigrad

Seline and Starigrad are connected by promenades and walking and cycling paths that pass through picturesque hamlets in the mountainous hinterland. One of the routes is the 8-kilometre hiking and cycling trail “Short Journey Through the Past”; it connects the two places and is rated easy.

The trail passes through the mountainous hinterland, by old hamlets, and offers views of the Velebit Channel. Along the route, you can see stone wells and village cisterns from the Austro-Hungarian period. From each hamlet along the trail, you can descend to the coast and swim in the sea. The narrow canyon and the paths through the hamlets and hinterland offer different landscapes; from the hamlets, you can also descend to the coast.

Wells, a church and historical traces

In the centre of Seline, an old well built using traditional dry-stone masonry stands on Put bunarića street. Its construction is an example of how stone is used in the local landscape. Near Jurline is the former main village cistern, built during the Austro-Hungarian period. A stone dam from one of the old mills is preserved in Mala Paklenica.

Between Starigrad and Seline, the medieval Church of St. Peter stands beside the Adriatic Highway. It was probably built at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries in the pre-Romanesque Old Croatian style. Archaeological investigations have been carried out at the church, which has been fully restored. At St. Peter’s, the focus is on the history of the building, while the well, cistern and mill dam tell more about former water supply and land use.

In the surrounding area, the Mirila are protected cultural heritage sites of the Republic of Croatia. A tourist map of the Mirila educational trails is available at the tourist information centre in Seline. As printed maps may not always be available, ask before your visit.
