Oltari is part of the settlement of Volarice and is the designated starting point for two cycling routes: the Oltari–Zavižan–Lom–Lubenovac–Alan cycling route and the Oltari–Duliba–Krasno cycling route. The Senj–Oltari cycling route also ends here. This means that both routes starting in Oltari and a route ending there are relevant to Volarice. Length, surface and elevation details offer different points of comparison for planning.

Cycling routes from and to Oltari

The Oltari–Zavižan–Lom–Lubenovac–Alan cycling route starts in Oltari and initially follows a paved road to the official entrance to Northern Velebit National Park at Babić Siča. From there, it continues on gravel to Zavižan and Mali Lom, then via Lubenovac to Alan. It is 44.5 km long in total; 32 percent of the route is paved and 68 percent is gravel. The elevation difference is 207 m. Spring, summer and autumn are recommended times to visit. Bicycles are not available for hire on the route. Conditions can vary by season, so it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out.

The Senj–Oltari cycling route also ends in Oltari. It is 19.24 km long, with a total ascent of 1,033 m; its elevation profile ranges from 42 m to 1,017 m. These figures complement the route length with information about the ascent and elevation, providing further considerations for planning a ride.

The Oltari–Duliba–Krasno cycling route also starts in Oltari and leads into the wider region. It is 10.8 km long; 71 percent is paved and 29 percent is gravel. The elevation difference is 207 m. Four circular cycling routes in Krasno connect to this route. The Northern Velebit National Park Information Centre and the Forestry Museum are also located there. Spring, summer and autumn are recommended for this route; bicycles are not available for hire along it. As seasonal access may vary, check the latest conditions before setting out.

Length is a good starting point for comparing the two routes from Oltari: 10.8 km to Krasno compared with 44.5 km via Zavižan to Alan. The surfaces also differ: the route to Krasno is 71 percent paved, while the route to Alan is 32 percent paved. The shorter route therefore has the higher proportion of paved surface, while the longer route has the higher proportion of gravel. Both have an elevation difference of 207 m. For Senj–Oltari, total ascent and the elevation profile are provided instead; these measurements add further planning considerations to the comparison of route lengths.

Hiking in the wider Velebit region

In the wider region, there are fifteen hiking trails in the protected area of Velebit. The 57 km-long Premužić Trail runs across the highest sections of the northern and central Velebit. The number of trails describes what is available in the protected area; the length refers to this particular trail. For hiking plans, this provides an overview of the trail network and the length of a single route as two different points of reference.
