Discover Udbina: History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Udbina
Udbina offers a range of reasons to visit: archaeological remains, church history, recurring religious events, and challenging cycling routes. When planning your trip, you can decide whether historical sites, a special Mass, or cycling should shape your stay. These themes differ considerably—from traces of a medieval fortress to routes with demanding climbs.
Archaeological Traces and Church History
Gradina lies on the northern edge of the hill on which modern-day Udbina stands. Its elevated, easily defended position served as a lookout point over the Krbava Field. Gradina is considered a medieval settlement and fortress, probably built in response to the Ottoman threat. Near the northern entrance, the lower part of a round tower and fragments of walls remain; the wall remnants are up to two metres high.
Another archaeological site lies on the eastern edge of the settlement: the site of St. James’s Cathedral. The cathedral was built in the Gothic style, probably in the last quarter of the 14th century. From 1185 to 1460, Udbina was the seat of the Diocese of Krbava. The two sites therefore represent different historical themes: Gradina for fortification and settlement, and the cathedral for the church history of the diocese.
Church of the Croatian Martyrs and Special Masses
The Church of the Croatian Martyrs is the largest church in Udbina and a Croatian national shrine. Special Masses on the second Saturday in September and the last Saturday in August attract many visitors. Around these recurring dates, the Municipality of Udbina organises religious and cultural programmes. The main Mass on the last Saturday in August is also accompanied by religious and cultural programmes and a fair.
If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the dates and programme details in advance: they may vary. This lets you combine your stay with these recurring events without conflating the historical sites with the event calendar, which is tied to specific dates.
Cycling Routes with Varying Levels of Difficulty
A mountain biking loop runs across the Međugorje Plateau and through the Sarajevo Valley. The landscapes described include forests, groves, and meadows; the route alternates between gravel and singletrack sections. The climbs and descents are considered challenging. A second route climbs to 1,550 metres. There is also an optional 30-minute walk to the summit of Ozeblin. From there, views extend towards Lika, the Una Canyon, Velebit, Dinara, and western Bosnia.
The loop can be assessed by its changing surfaces and demanding elevation changes; for the second route, the elevation reached is another point of reference. The optional walk to Ozeblin adds a short walking section to the choice of tours. Also take seasonal route conditions into account when planning.
