Orehovica: Culture, Church History and Protected Nature
Accommodation in Orehovica
Orehovica combines active association life with historical details of the parish church and the protected Mura–Drava Regional Park. If you are looking for a hotel in Orehovica, these themes can help you place the town in the context of specific travel interests: association life and folklore sit alongside church history, protected landscapes, and a planned mill project. The information ranges from an active cultural association to past events and municipal plans.
Association Life and Folklore
The local cultural association KUD “Fijolica” is active and includes drama, folklore, and tambura sections. Performing arts, folklore, and music are therefore among the different facets of association life in Orehovica.
A historical glimpse into KUD’s children’s folklore section comes from 2019–2020, when it operated as an extracurricular activity at Orehovica Primary School. At a regional festival in 2019, the group performed dances from Međimurje. This makes it possible to distinguish the association’s broad profile from a specific, time-bound example of school folklore activities.
Orehijada and Cultural Events
Orehijada 2021 opened with an exhibition of old objects and presentations of local products and handicrafts from local farms and associations. At another edition of Orehijada in Orehovica, homemade sour soup and other local products were also offered, including cakes, homemade pasta, and bread.
An international folklore and choral showcase in Orehovica brought together nine cultural associations from Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia, along with more than 150 participants. The walnut monument Spomenik Orehu was unveiled during Orehijada. These examples show different cultural connections, from local products and handicrafts to an international gathering and a permanent monument.
Historical Details of the Parish Church
Orehovica’s parish church is associated with two consecutive consecration dates. Three bells were blessed on September 22, 1972, and remain in the church tower. The following day, September 23, the church’s altar and walls were consecrated. The dates make the sequence clear, while the details concern different things: first the bells, then the altar and walls.
Landscape and Orientation
Around 380 hectares of the protected Mura–Drava Regional Park lie within the municipality of Orehovica. The 2021 municipal spatial plan lists the old Jezerčica river branch, as well as wet meadows, groves, and scrubland, as habitats to be preserved. The area figure gives an approximate sense of the park’s share, while the plan also identifies specific landscape features.
In the Kalapinđa area, an old mill and artificial dams are associated with milling. Municipal plans envisage revitalizing the area for educational and tourism use. Milling belongs to its former use; educational and tourism use is planned for the area as part of the proposed revitalization.
