Čakovec: Culture, Parks and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Čakovec
Čakovec can be explored through several themes: the history of the Zrinski family, Međimurje’s cultural heritage, park architecture and regional cuisine. Other highlights include sacred art, cultural events and sporting history. These different themes give you ideas for planning your stay around your interests.
History and exhibitions
Muzej Međimurja Čakovec is housed in the palace in Čakovec Old Town. It preserves around 25,000 objects in 51 museum collections. The permanent exhibitions currently open include “The Zrinski and Čakovec Old Town,” the art gallery and Riznica Međimurja. As exhibition availability may change, please check which displays are currently open before your visit.
The permanent exhibition “The Zrinski and Čakovec Old Town” explores the history and heritage of the noble Zrinski family. It also covers aspects of noble life: education, marriage, fashion, food and leisure. This broadens the focus beyond the family’s political history to include the areas of life that shaped an era.
Riznica Međimurja is located within the fortifications of Zrinski Old Town. The exhibition interprets Međimurje’s cultural heritage through traditions, oral histories, knowledge and skills. It uses 3D mapping, holograms, multimedia displays and 4D effects to present the material. The exhibition features 13 protected intangible cultural heritage elements, including two on UNESCO’s Representative List; this number may change.
Church and park architecture
The Church of St Nicholas in Čakovec has Baroque furnishings. Its stained-glass windows were created by Ivo Dulčić in 1962 and Branimir Dorotić in 1989. The two dates place the windows in different periods of artistic activity and offer a concrete way to explore the church’s art history.
Perivoj Zrinskih is a protected monument of park architecture. Paths through the park pass monuments, statues, busts and Zrinski Castle. The plant life also shapes its appearance: it includes more than 1,000 deciduous and coniferous trees, as well as around 200 deciduous and evergreen shrubs. The museum focuses on collections and exhibitions; in the park, the paths connect the historical features mentioned above with the landscape design.
Regional insights and other interests
The Ekomuzej Međimurje Visitor Center in Čakovec offers a multimedia presentation about sights in fourteen traditional settlements. This extends the focus beyond Čakovec’s individual themes to the region’s towns and attractions. The Čakovec Gastro Route showcases local dishes, including Pretepena soup, meat from a tiblica, Turoš cheese and Međimurska Gibanica.
Centar za kulturu Čakovec organizes programmes featuring performances, concerts, events and film screenings. Sporting history is also part of the local picture: the first permanent tennis court in Čakovec was built in 1926 on the site of today’s courts at Teniski klub Franjo Punčec. Some of the club’s players have been national champions.
There is also a regional connection for cycling enthusiasts. Themed routes link Čakovec with Terme Sveti Martin and Štrigova via the Međimurje Wine Road. The wider cycling network in Međimurje includes flatland routes suitable for families along the Mura and Drava rivers, as well as the Cyclist Welcome network. These regional offerings complement the cultural and park themes without focusing on just one area.
