Municipality of Bilje: Nature, History and Tradition
Accommodation in Municipality of Bilje
The Municipality of Bilje offers a range of experiences: nature watching at Kopački rit, the history of Tikveš Castle and festivals celebrating fishing and paprika traditions. You can shape your trip around the experiences that interest you—from natural phenomena and wildlife watching to regional cuisine and customs.
Tikveš: Nature Education and Castle History
In the northern part of Kopački rit Nature Park, the Tikveš Presentation and Education Centre introduces visitors to the key features and natural phenomena of Kopački rit through a multimedia, interactive exhibition. The centre offers a distinctive way to discover the park’s nature: the exhibition uses engaging interpretation rather than simply providing descriptions.
The Tikveš Castle complex includes the New Castle and its annex, as well as the Old Castle; the complex dates back to the 19th century. Nature education and architectural history offer two different themes for your visit. The route to Zlatna Greda also passes through the dense forests of Kopački rit and by Tikveš Castle.
Wildlife Watching, Cycling and Fishing
The “Blago močvare” educational trail has two observation huts, each with a different focus. One is for watching wildlife, particularly deer during the rutting season; the other is intended for birdwatching along the Čarna Canal. This contrast highlights the different interests visitors can pursue, without implying that any particular sighting is guaranteed.
Fishing is another leisure activity: the Vemeljski dunavac, right by the settlement of Tikveš, is suitable for recreational fishing. Fishing also takes place at Lake Bilje, which locals call Stara Drava; anglers can regularly be seen there on the shore or in a boat. A newly renovated cycle path connects Osijek with Lake Bilje.
For groups who make arrangements in advance, Zlatna Greda offers activities on all days of the week, including cycling, paddling through Kopački rit and photo safaris. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, be sure to arrange it in advance. One of the three road routes to Kopački rit Nature Park also starts in Lug.
Festivals and Cultural Traditions
The Ribarski dani (Fishermen’s Days) in Kopačevo keep the settlement’s fishing tradition alive and are held regularly in early September. Visitors can enjoy traditional fish specialities, game dishes and fine wines from Baranja. The festival brings together local food culture and the settlement’s fishing history.
In Lug, the Paprika Festival celebrates ground paprika, one of the most distinctive ingredients in Baranja’s cuisine. The festival is traditionally held on the occasion of the village day; guests can also learn about the culture and customs of Hungarians in Croatia. The Reformed Christian Church offers another perspective on the settlement: it is located in the centre of Lug and is considered a local landmark. The simple pilgrimage church in Lug was also visited by pilgrims in its early days.
Vardarac has an Ethno House with an extensive ethnographic collection, which is intended to be made increasingly accessible to tourists. A riding club in Vardarac offers tourist horseback riding. Kakasütés, the symbolic striking of a rooster, is part of the local carnival tradition: this distinctive event is the final item on the carnival programme.
