Municipality of Bizovac: Architectural History and Lakes
Accommodation in Municipality of Bizovac
The Municipality of Bizovac brings together architectural history and traditional costume culture, with Bizovački bajeri as a distinctive landscape feature. Its sights and events offer different highlights: historic buildings and traditional costumes take you to Bizovac, while the “Olimpijada starih sportova” takes you to Brođanci. You can explore culture, traditional sports, and nature as different focal points of your trip.
Architectural History and Traditional Costume Culture
The parish church of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, was built in 1802 in a simple Baroque-classical style. Normann Prandau-Ehrenfels Castle was built in the center of Bizovac in the 1830s. Despite several renovations, it has retained features of the style of its period of construction. Together, the church and castle mark two specific points in the area’s architectural history.
The permanent exhibition “Bizovačko blago” is housed in the Normann Curia and displays original men’s and women’s traditional costumes from Bizovac. The Bizovac costume is a characteristic Slavonian folk costume. Hungarian influences, as well as influences from Bačka and Baranja, are thought to be present. The exhibition and the costume offer different insights: one displays original clothing from Bizovac, while the other represents a regional tradition with influences that are described cautiously.
Traditions and Events
The “Olimpijada starih sportova” in Brođanci was founded on February 25, 1973, as a sporting and cultural event to preserve local folk heritage and regional folk traditions. It takes place every year on the last Sunday in August. Check the dates for the year of your trip. Traditional events include Kandžijanje, Tokač, tug-of-war, stone putting, horseshoe throwing, and sack racing; individual events may vary.
The “Bizovačke ljetne večeri” add a distinctive culinary highlight. Their program includes a traditional international Fišijada featuring cooks who prepare Fiš-paprikaš. This adds a festival program centered on a regional dish to the sporting traditions. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the latest participation details.
Lowlands and Bizovački bajeri
The Municipality of Bizovac is predominantly flat and low-lying. The Danube, Drava, Sava, and their tributaries have shaped the present-day terrain; the elevation ranges from 90 to 100 meters. These figures offer a clear sense of the landscape’s lowland character.
Bizovački bajeri are a group of several lakes with a total area of about 15 hectares. They were created through the extraction of clay for brickmaking; their origin links today’s waterscape with an earlier use of the land. Fishing is possible at the lakes, and catch and release is also an option. Local fishing regulations may change, so check them in advance. Bathing and swimming are possible during the summer bathing season. Check conditions before swimming.
Getting Around and Travel Connections
The D2 state road passes through the settlements of Bizovac, Cret Bizovački, and Samatovci, which belong to the Municipality of Bizovac. The municipality is also served by the R202 regional railway line (Varaždin–Koprivnica–Virovitica–Osijek–Dalj) and the L207 local railway line (Bizovac–Belišće). There is a railway station in the center of Bizovac. Both road and rail connections are therefore part of the local transport network.
