Cultural heritage, pilgrimage traditions and landscapes along the Danube come together in the Municipality of Erdut. Dalj offers insights into the history of science, sacred architecture and archaeology; Aljmaš adds its own spiritual dimension. Around Erdut, historic buildings, wine and viewpoints add to the mix. These different themes can help you choose the focus of your stay.

Dalj: Science, Architectural History and Archaeology

In the centre of Dalj, the “Teutoburgium” Wine Museum was established as a project of the Municipality of Erdut in cooperation with Osijek-Baranja County. Another cultural venue is the restored birthplace of Milutin Milanković. It houses a permanent exhibition about his life and work and also serves as the home of the “Milutin Milanković” Cultural and Scientific Centre. In this way, the scientist’s legacy is connected with both an exhibition venue and a cultural institution.

Sacred architectural history also shapes Dalj. The Patriarchal Court, the summer residence of Serbian patriarchs, dates from 1754. Hram sv. Dimitrija was built in 1799 on the foundations of an older church dating from 1715 and is considered Croatia’s largest Orthodox cathedral church. The archaeological park offers a different historical perspective: it documents the “Dalj Idol”, an elaborately decorated female figurine from the Middle Bronze Age. Together, these different sites span a period from an early archaeological era to buildings from the 18th century.

Aljmaš and Erdut: Pilgrimage, Wine and Castles

In Aljmaš, the Shrine of Our Lady of Refuge has been a pilgrimage site since 1704. In Erdut, a large Slavonian oak wine cask offers a different point of interest: it is located at the Erdutski vinogradi winery and holds 75,000 litres. Adamović Čeh Castle stands in eastern Erdut. It was built in the late 18th or early 19th century and substantially expanded in the 19th century. Pilgrimage, wine and architectural history each offer a distinct way to explore the municipality.

Landscapes, Viewpoints and Routes

The Aljmaš-Erdut-Dalj planina area lies along the Danube and its tributaries, serves as a recreational area and offers numerous viewpoints. The nature-related features of the educational trail are also notable: its route through the significant landscape area of Erdut lies within the Natura 2000 network and the Mura-Drava-Danube UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

A specific route description comes from the 2019 edition of the blue Podunavlje Cross/Trail: it was 34 kilometres long and ran from Erdut to Aljmaš and back to Erdut. This route description, tied to a particular year, can be considered separately from the enduring landscape and cultural themes as you decide what interests you during your stay.
