Discover the Municipality of Semeljci
Accommodation in Municipality of Semeljci
Semeljci lies on the northern edge of the Đakovo Plain. The Brána and Semèljčica streams flow through Semeljci; Semèljčica flows into the Brána. The two streams are distinctive landmarks in the landscape. In addition, every settlement in the municipality has a prepared lake that can be reached by vehicle. Anglers have turned the lakes into centers for sport, recreation, and excursions. These waterside spots add another dimension to the landscape, alongside the destination’s churches, archaeological finds, and cultural traditions.
Churches and traces of earlier settlements
The present-day parish church of the Nativity of Mary was built between Semeljci and Kešinci from 1784 to 1788. For centuries, an image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, known as Semeljačka Gospa, has been venerated there. The area’s religious history also includes an earlier pilgrimage tradition: the church in Semeljci was a pilgrimage site, and three-day novenas were held before the feast on September 8.
Archaeological finds in Semeljci point to a prehistoric settlement with semi-subterranean houses—structures partially dug into the ground. They date from the Neolithic and the Late Bronze Age and are attributed to the Starčevo or Sopot culture. The religious heritage thus sits alongside a much older history of settlement.
The Semeljačke snaše singing group also preserves cultural traditions in the Semeljci area. These include traditional singing, folk customs, crafts, and traditional dress. These different forms of preservation—from the religious image to singing and crafts—offer insight into different aspects of local culture.
Festivals throughout the year
In Koritna, the Vesela Šokadija cultural association holds the festival “Poklade su, milo janje moje” every year during Carnival. Easter Monday also sees the Easter horseback procession there. About 50 riders from the municipality and surrounding places take part. The two events connect Koritna with different points in the festive calendar.
In June, the traditional Kolo na Vrbaku folklore festival brings together cultural associations from Croatia and abroad. Antunovo also takes place in Kešinci in June: a procession leads from the village center to the chapel of Saint Anthony. There is also a clay-pigeon shooting competition organized by the Zec hunting association from Semeljci, or its group in Koritna. The competition has team and individual categories. Folklore, religious tradition, and competition thus offer different themes for June’s events.
On the eve of Saint John’s Day, the Lipa cultural association observes the Ivanje–Lilanje tradition with a demonstration of fire-jumping and lilanje. In October, the Tamburica orchestra of the Municipality of Semeljci holds its annual concert. Also in October, the Vesela Šokadija cultural association organizes a children’s folklore festival dedicated to nurturing and preserving folklore traditions and children’s games.
Local specialties and when to visit
At the Pužijada in Vrbica, a variety of snail specialties are prepared. Rakijada in Semeljci focuses on fruit brandies: they are judged, after which the winners among the highest-rated fruit brandies are announced. The two events highlight different culinary specialties and refer to different products and places.
The events mentioned offer several guides for choosing when to travel: Carnival is followed by Easter Monday and the June events; in October, there is the concert and the children’s folklore festival. If a particular festival is central to your travel plans, check the exact date before setting off. Churches, archaeological history, local culture, and waterside spots also offer different ways to enjoy your stay in the Municipality of Semeljci.
