Općina Šodolovci: Churches, Archaeology and Folklore
Accommodation in Općina Šodolovci
Medieval churches, archaeological sites and Serbian folklore offer different perspectives on the history and culture of Općina Šodolovci. In Koprivna, the medieval Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God stands in the Orthodox cemetery; Koprivna is part of the Municipality of Šodolovci. The plateau with the church and cemetery is protected as the medieval archaeological site “Udovičko polje”. Finds there point to a medieval settlement with an associated cemetery. For travellers, Koprivna brings together architectural history and archaeological traces at a clearly identified local focal point.
Churches and Sites from the Middle Ages to the Baroque Period
The church’s present-day Baroque appearance dates to its restoration in 1751. Four medieval windows have been preserved, and the structure of an original Romanesque portal was also identified at the present-day south portal. The medieval windows, Romanesque portal structure and Baroque appearance point to different building phases of the same structure.
Another archaeological point of interest is the Vodenčina settlement site, which is listed in the Croatian Register of Cultural Goods. Finds from the Early and Middle Neolithic are probably attributed to the Sopot culture. Thus, the archaeological story spans from Neolithic traces at Vodenčina to the medieval settlement site of Udovičko polje in Koprivna. The time separating these two sites shows how many historical periods are represented in the municipality.
Church, Folklore and Silašijada in Silaš
The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Silaš offers a more recent chapter in the area’s architectural history. The new Serbian-Byzantine-style building was completed in 2013 and has two domes; the carved iconostasis was made by Dragan Šaponja from Kolut. Regular services have been held there since its completion. Compared with the medieval church in Koprivna, the building in Silaš is a much more recent landmark. If you plan to attend a service, it is advisable to check the times in advance.
The “Zora” cultural and artistic ensemble also helps shape cultural life in Silaš. Founded in 2006, it aims to preserve the traditions and culture of Serbs in Croatia. Around 50 members take part in a folklore group and a women’s singing group. At performances, KUD “Zora” presents some of its twelve stylised choreographies and three staged depictions of customs. Folklore and women’s singing feature as distinct forms of the ensemble’s work.
The Silašijada is conceived as a showcase of traditional folklore, customs, handicrafts and old sports. In addition to organisers and associations from Croatia, associations from neighbouring countries are also expected to participate. The old sports competition takes place in front of the cultural centre in Silaš; afterwards, participants parade through the village and visit the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah. While KUD “Zora” brings together folklore and singing groups, the Silašijada also features old sports and handicrafts. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the specific dates in advance.
