In the Municipality of Vuka, the history of the settlement of Vuka, sacred architecture, and memories of people from the area take center stage. When planning your trip, you can distinguish this local focus from the natural and cultural attractions of the wider destination of Osijek-Baranja County. This can help you weigh up whether to focus your stay on local history or regional interests.

The history of the settlement of Vuka

Between 1751 and 1773, the settlement on the Vuka River was founded under the name Josipovac. In 1773, it was renamed Vuka after the river. The river’s name thus connects two important milestones in the area’s history: its founding as Josipovac and its later renaming. Archaeological sites also represent different periods. The cemetery on Osječka ulica in Vuka is a late medieval site; Oskoruš, in the cadastral area of Vuka, is classified as a prehistoric archaeological site.

Church, memorial plaque, and notable figures

The Church of St. Joseph in Vuka is an old Baroque church. Devotion to Saint Joseph has been established there since the 18th century. The church has been extended and restored, and a Lourdes grotto stands beside it. The site brings architectural history and religious tradition together.

Katarina Matanović Kulenović was born in Vuka and became Croatia’s first female pilot. Milko Cepelić was also born in Vuka. He became a priest, historian, and ethnologist. In his manuscript “Povijest sela Vuke,” he described the history of Vuka, Slavonian customs, and traditional dress. A memorial plaque is displayed at his birthplace in Vuka; it was restored in 1995 and remains visible. Together, these biographies offer insight into different connections with local history: aviation, church life, and the study of history and ethnology.

Planned cycling and pedestrian route

A project proposes a combined cycling and pedestrian route in Vuka, divided into six sections. The sections are planned to total 5.4 kilometers and run through the entire settlement. The project plan also includes a bus stop on State Road D7, which passes through Vuka. These details describe a planned project, not confirmation that the entire route has been completed. If you would like to include the route in your itinerary, check the current project status.
