Ilok can be explored from several perspectives: Odescalchi Castle and the Town Museum represent the cultural sites of the old town; the Danube Promenade and Dunavac shape the river landscape. There is also a cycling route through the countryside and activities related to wine. For your planning, you can distinguish between these themes according to the focus of your trip: culture, nature, cycling or wine.

Odescalchi Castle and Town Museum

Odescalchi Castle is the central building in Ilok’s medieval old town. The castle houses the Ilok Town Museum, which offers interested visitors expert-guided tours of its permanent exhibition. Check the current visitor information before your visit.

The museum includes departments covering archaeology, the Middle Ages and ethnography, as well as a gallery department. Other sections focus on the wars of the 20th century and the ethnography of Syrmia. The atrium contains an open-air museum. The topics therefore range from archaeological and medieval content to regional ethnography and the wars of the last century. If you are planning a visit, you can use these topics to decide which sections are of particular interest.

Church, Monastery and Interpretation Centre

The Church and Monastery of Saint John of Capistrano preserve the saint’s original cell chapel. It is visited by pilgrims and other visitors. The monastery tower also offers a view of the surrounding area: the observation point is about 100 metres above the ground. The chapel and the tower offer different reasons to visit—religious heritage on the one hand, and views over the surrounding area on the other.

Another cultural site is Kurija Brnjaković. It houses the interpretation centre “Ilok – vrata Hrvatske.” It adds another named site for visitors interested in Ilok’s cultural offerings to the destinations located in the castle and monastery.

Danube Promenade and Dunavac

The landscaped Danube Promenade, with its lighting and flower beds, offers views of the Danube and of the old town, its church and its city walls. It brings together views of the river and of the historic townscape. The Danube arm Dunavac lies between the Danube and the old town perched on a hill. It invites visitors to relax, enjoy sports and experience nature. The promenade and Dunavac thus offer two different perspectives on the river landscape: a landscaped riverside promenade and a Danube arm between the river and the old town.

Cycling between the Danube and the Vineyards

Ilok is part of the European cycling route along the Danube. The Croatian section of this tourist Danube cycle route is 138 kilometres long. It is important to note that this figure refers to the Croatian section, not the entire European route.

The signposted off-road route “Put vinograda” branches off from EuroVelo 6 and leads into the countryside and vineyards between Vukovar and Šarengrad/Ilok. If you want to use this route, follow the current signs. The two route descriptions provide different points of reference: EuroVelo 6 is the broader route along the Danube, while “Put vinograda” branches off as an off-road route into the countryside and vineyards.

Cellars, Wineries and Tastings

In the Ilok area, you can visit traditional Srijem cellars or modern wineries, learn more about winemaking, taste wine and enjoy a snack. Advance booking may be required for tastings. This experience combines a visit with insights into wine production and the opportunity to discover different types of wine venues.

The Old Cellars of Ilok are next to Odescalchi Castle. Guided tours of parts of the cellar complex are available; tastings and, on request, cold or hot meals can also be arranged. Arrangements may need to be made in advance. If you are planning a cellar visit, therefore, distinguish between a tour of parts of the complex and possible additions such as tastings or meals.
