The Municipality of Brdovec is located in Croatia, in Zagreb County. Visitors planning a stay here will find a destination shaped by historic buildings, a museum, and opportunities for outdoor activities. In the north of the municipality are gentle, wooded hills, vineyards, and landscaped properties with numerous weekend homes.

Landscape and Outdoor Activities

Outdoor tourism includes opportunities for horse riding, fishing, cycling, hiking, and motocross. Specific offerings from individual providers may vary. The tracks at Pepačev brijeg in Prigorje Brdovečko and in Ključ Brdovečki are known for motorsport; national and international competitions are held there. Check the dates of individual competitions before visiting.

The cycling network also offers a regional perspective on the area. Three cycling routes pass through Brdovec, Marija Gorica, and Dubravica; two of them connect with routes in Zagorje. The Natura 2000 site Sutla also extends across these three municipalities. In this part of Zagreb County, cycling routes and a protected area spanning several municipalities therefore meet.

Muzej Brdovec and Its Collections

Muzej Brdovec is housed in an early 20th-century Secession-style building. The building and its grounds are protected together as a cultural asset. The museum was founded in 1973 as a local museum and focuses on materials from the area between the western foothills of Medvednica and the Sutla border with Slovenia. Its collections include archaeological, ethnographic, and cultural-historical holdings.

One example of the museum’s cultural programming is the completed project “Buna / Upor / Revolt 1573–2023.” It included exhibitions, lectures, workshops, guided visits, and an excursion about the Peasants’ Revolt. The project offers a glimpse of the range of the program at the time; it is not a current events calendar.

Churches, Castles, and Living Traditions

The Brdovec parish was founded in 1334 and is one of the oldest in the Archdiocese of Zagreb. Its former parish seat was on a hill where the Chapel of the Holy Cross still stands today. The chapel is now part of the Marija Gorica parish.

Januševec Castle was built around 1830 for Baron Josip Vrkljan. It is considered the greatest achievement of Croatia’s Neoclassical architecture and is a Category 0 monument. It was restored between 1947 and 1989; part of the Croatian State Archives was also housed there. Vranyczany-Dobrinović Castle, with its park, is in Laduč, between the Sava plain and the southern slopes of the Marija Gorica hills. The estate has been known as a noble country residence since the 17th century.

Local associations also contribute to cultural traditions. KUD Januševec preserves local songs, dances, traditional costumes, and customs. The recurring grape harvest event “Kak su brali naši stari” is associated with Brdovec, Dubravica, and Marija Gorica. Its activities include horse-drawn carts, traditional costumes, traditional food and drinks, and grape harvesting and pressing in the old style. Members of Udruga Trsek produce traditional wines of the area; the association organizes wine tastings and an annual Vincekovo celebration. Check specific event dates in advance.
