Dubrava – Churches, History and Rural Experiences
Accommodation in Dubrava
Dubrava lies in Zagreb County, on the border between Moslavina and Prigorje. Churches and the town’s history give the place a cultural focus, while agriculture and an organically farmed orchard offer another perspective on the region. If you are planning a stay, you can take these different sides of Dubrava into account when making your travel plans.
Churches and Medieval History
The parish church of St. Margaret is a Gothic building from the late 15th century that was given a Baroque makeover in 1720. Its wooden main altar dates from 1918 and bears an altarpiece by the painter Ivan Tišov. The altar is considered a rare example of one created in the spirit of the Secession. The church thus brings together several periods and design styles.
The Chapel of St. Martin also has its own architectural history: it was partially demolished in 1819, after which the present-day chapel was built. A Gothic triumphal arch, Gothic windows and Gothic frescoes depicting saints have been preserved. These architectural features offer a tangible impression of the different forms that make up the history of the place.
Dubrava was a medieval episcopal town, surrounded by a wall with nine semicircular towers. Within the town stood a square-plan castle with four corner towers. Dubrava is also connected with political history: in 1527, the Croatian Parliament met here and elected Ivan Zapolja as king. The fortifications, castle and assembly are among the different aspects of Dubrava’s historical significance.
Rural Character and Apple Orchard
Agriculture and livestock farming shape the character of the Dubrava municipality. Established sectors include fruit and vegetable growing, as well as pig and cattle farming. This economic profile offers a different way to experience the region from its churches and medieval town history.
In the broader destination of Općina Dubrava, OOPG Mlađan is located in Ladina. The farm has a 7.5-hectare organically farmed orchard. Apple and pear trees grow there; OOPG Mlađan offers peaceful walks through the orchard and the chance to take part in the apple harvest. The season and advance booking are important if you wish to participate in the harvest. If you are planning this particular activity, check both before your trip.
Festivals and Seasonal Experiences
DubravaFest is a recurring community festival. In 2024, its third edition took place from June 7 to 9; the festival was announced as part of the Days of the Municipality of Dubrava in 2026. Dates and programs can change, so check the information for the year you are interested in before making specific travel plans.
The traditional motorcycle and cycling gathering also offers a glimpse of community events: its 13th edition took place on Easter Monday. It began in KriĹľevci and ended in Dubrava and Nova Kapela; the vehicles were blessed in front of the Church of St. Margaret. The route and date may change in future editions.
A historical example of the cultural program is the Easter egg exhibition “Uskrs u Dubravi.” It took place on April 8, 2017, in the school and sports hall, was organized by the “Sveta Margareta” association, and was held under the patronage of the Municipality of Dubrava. Fifty-four exhibitors from six counties in central Croatia presented traditional Easter eggs from their regions, as well as eggs decorated using modern techniques. The exhibition thus brings together regional traditions and different styles of decoration; it should be understood as an event from 2017.
