Kloštar Ivanić: Monastery, Well and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Kloštar Ivanić
Kloštar Ivanić brings together monastic architecture, religious heritage and historical tradition. The central village well and the complex comprising the Franciscan monastery and the Church of St John the Baptist represent different aspects of the town’s history. The wider destination of Općina Kloštar Ivanić adds pilgrimage, regional culture and a cycling route to the picture.
The Well, the Church and the Monastery’s History
A historic village well stands in the centre of Kloštar Ivanić. It is considered one of the few surviving examples of this type of historic architectural monument in northern Croatia. The well was probably built for the Military Frontier. This attribution remains a possibility; the well itself is an independent point of reference for the town’s architectural history.
The Church of St John the Baptist is part of the Franciscan monastery. Together, they form an architectural complex completed in 1508. The large church was originally Gothic and was later given Baroque features. The building thus brings together Gothic design elements and a later Baroque transformation—offering a distinct perspective on the complex’s history alongside its early origins.
The Franciscan pharmacy also tells of the monastery’s long history. A pharmacy there is documented as early as 1670. In 1742, it was granted the status of a public institution and served the healthcare needs of the population. The two dates mark different stages: its initial mention within the monastery, followed later by its public role. The pharmacy’s history can therefore be understood not only as part of monastic life, but also in relation to local healthcare.
A Book in the Parish Archive
The “Book of Miracles of the Ivanić Madonna” is kept in the parish archive of the Franciscan Church of St John the Baptist. It contains around sixty accounts from the period between 1757 and 1782, written in the local Kajkavian language. Alongside the buildings, it offers a written record from the region: the entries span a long historical period and preserve the language in which they were recorded. If you would like to include the archive or the book in your visit plans, check access arrangements locally in advance.
The Wider Destination of Općina Kloštar Ivanić
Within the wider destination of Općina Kloštar Ivanić, Kloštar Ivanić is the municipal centre in north-western Moslavina; it lies four kilometres north-east of Ivanić-Grad. Another church in the town, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is considered the most significant monument of sacred architecture and history in this area. The 69-metre-high tower of the Church of St John the Baptist is a separate landmark: in 1817, it was chosen as the starting point for the cadastral survey of Croatia and Slavonia.
Pilgrimage and local culture are also part of this wider picture. The Shrine of Our Lady of Mercy draws numerous pilgrims from Croatia and around the world every year. The Kloštar Cultural and Arts Association is active in Kloštar Ivanić, preserving and presenting traditional Moslavina songs and dances. An information board titled “The History of Kloštar Ivanić” also stands in the town centre. It makes basic historical information permanently accessible to residents and visitors.
Cycling Route and Landscape
The 29-kilometre Glogovnica cycling route passes through Kloštar Ivanić and continues to the Glogovnica River. It connects the town with vineyards, settlements, orchards and Čret Forest. If you are considering a cycling trip, you can take the stated route length into account when planning your time. Take particular care when cycling on the three-kilometre main road between Kloštar Ivanić and Ivanić-Grad, as it carries considerably heavier traffic.
Horse breeding is also part of the rural character of Općina Kloštar Ivanić. Around 30 horse breeders operate in the municipality, mostly breeding the Hrvatski posavac breed. The horses are kept on more than 220 hectares of communal pastureland. Together with the cycling route, this offers another regional point of interest alongside the churches, monastery and written heritage.
