Sveti Ivan Zelina brings together cultural attractions, winemaking and opportunities for excursions in the Zelina area. When planning your stay, the museum, churches, trails and wine offerings provide a range of ways to explore—from visiting a collection to hiking to Kladeščica.

Museum and Churches in the Town Centre

The Muzej Sveti Ivan Zelina is located in the town centre. A local history collection established in 1977 was followed by the founding of the local history museum in 1988. Today, it preserves around 15,000 objects across 17 collections. Their time span stretches from prehistory to the present, making the museum a broad introduction to the history of the area.

Also in the town centre is Crkva Svetog Ivana Krstitelja, the Church of St John the Baptist. Its massive bell tower defines the building. The church is mentioned as early as 1200, when Zelina belonged to the Bishops of Zagreb. The Baroque furnishings inside are noteworthy, including a particularly valuable pulpit dating from 1726, a work by Zagreb sculptor Kautz.

The religious buildings in the surrounding area include Kapela Svetog Petra in Novo Mjesto. Considered the oldest religious building in the Zelina area, it was built in the early 13th century during the Romanesque period. Different historical eras can therefore be seen in and around Sveti Ivan Zelina: the early mention of the central church, its Baroque furnishings and the Romanesque chapel.

Zelingrad and the Landscape Around the Town

About five kilometres north of the town lies Zelingrad, a medieval fortification on the northeastern slopes of Medvednica. Visitors can see the remains of the front and rear defensive towers, the outer courtyard, the residential complex and a water cistern. The site can thus be explored through its surviving structures, rather than being limited to a single tower.

Zelinska glava is also nearby. This significant landscape was protected in 1992 and covers 1,003.94 hectares. From viewpoints around Sveti Ivan Zelina, you can look out over surrounding villages, orchards, vineyards, fields and wooded areas, as well as the meadows in the plain of the Lonja River. The landscape thus combines cultivated land with open plains.

Another excursion destination, Jezero Mokrica, is maintained and equipped for anglers and visitors; basic food and drink facilities are available. It is therefore suited both to visitors who want to fish and to those who want to combine an outing with a simple meal or refreshments.

Trails to Kladeščica

Two differently described routes to Kladeščica are available for hiking. Planinarska staza 71, also known as Zelina–Kladeščica, starts in Zelina and ends at Kladeščica. It is 7.8 kilometres long; the stated walking time is 2 hours 30 minutes, with an elevation difference of 328 metres.

The Kroz Zelinsku goru educational and eco-trail runs for seven kilometres from a spring in Biškupec, via Zelingrad, to the excursion destination of Kladeščica. Three hours are allowed for exploring it. From Sveti Ivan Zelina, the route passes through Biškupec Zelinski to Kladeščica; you can travel it on foot or by bicycle. The trail introduces features of the ecosystems of Zelinska gora and Hrvatsko Prigorje, as well as common plant and animal species. The time estimates have different emphases: a walking time is given for Planinarska staza, while the time for the educational and eco-trail refers to exploring it.

Wine Trails and Regional Specialities

The Zelinska vinska cesta passes through wine-producing villages in the Zelina area. Along the route, visitors can explore wine cellars, vineyards and wine huts, and enjoy local specialities and wine. This offers a different way to get to know the region than a visit to a church or museum, with winemaking and gastronomy at its centre.

Izložba vina kontinentalne Hrvatske includes wine tastings, an awards ceremony, workshops on viticulture and winemaking, presentations by Zelina winemakers and a gastronomic programme. Check the dates and programme before your trip if you would like to include the event in your plans.
