In Vrbovec, architectural history and regional food culture meet diverse forms of cultural life. For planning your trip, historic buildings, the Zavičajna zbirka, local cuisine and a cycling event each offer a different focus. You can tailor your stay to whether you are most interested in architecture, collections, traditions or sporting routes.

Architectural history in Vrbovec

St. Vitus Church was originally a Gothic building dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. Its present-day appearance resulted from a Baroque restoration in the second half of the 18th century; a side chapel and an entrance hall were added in the 19th century. The church therefore reflects several distinct building phases.

The mausoleum of the De Piennes family stands in the Vrbovec cemetery. It is a significant work of modern architecture by Hugo Ehrlich and Viktor Kovačić. The small Baroque Patačić Palace has also survived to this day: after 1755, the Patačić family built a new masonry palace on the ruins of a wing of the old castle.

Kula Petra Zrinskog is a protected cultural asset and a surviving remnant of the former castle of the Patačić family. Kula Zrinski is open to visitors. Check the current visitor access arrangements before your visit.

Collection and educational activities

The Zavičajna zbirka of Pučko otvoreno učilište Vrbovec encompasses archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical and art-historical collections. Its holdings include more than 1,000 objects, fragments, archival materials and books; around 300 objects are on display. These figures refer to different totals: the complete collection and the objects on display.

Visits to the collection are possible every day by prior arrangement. Expert-guided tours are available for groups of 10 to 30 people. Confirm arrangements for your visit and group tour before travelling. Pučko otvoreno učilište Vrbovec also runs themed educational workshops for children and adults, tailored to their interests.

Vrbovečka pera and culinary traditions

Vrbovečka pera is a round pastry made from yeast dough. The filling’s main ingredients are fresh cow’s cheese, sour cream and eggs; the sweet version also contains a tablespoon of sugar. Registered as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG), the pastry has been part of the EU quality scheme since 21 June 2024.

Another culinary tradition is the event “Kaj su jeli naši stari”, organised in Vrbovec every year since 1981 on the last weekend of August. Women’s associations from Vrbovec and the surrounding municipalities of Preseke, Rakovec, Gradec, Dubrava and Farkaševac prepare traditional regional dishes there, as they learned to make them from their mothers and grandmothers. As specific programme dates may vary, check the event dates before travelling.

Cycling event, nature and practical information

The Vrbovečka utrka illustrates how the route lengths can vary from one edition to another: the 2026 event started at Trg Petra Zrinskog in Vrbovec. The Gran Fondo route was 98 km long, and the Medio Fondo route was 61 km long. These figures refer to the 2026 edition; route lengths and start arrangements may change in future editions.

In the wider area around Vrbovec, the Vrbovec Forestry Administration manages the Varoški lug special zoological reserve, which has the “Staza prijateljstva s prirodom” nature trail, as well as the Česma and Novakuša forest vegetation reserves.

Vrbovec has a bus station and a railway station. There is free parking in the town centre; parking may be more difficult on Tuesdays because of market day. If you are travelling by car, take this difference into account when planning your trip.
