Lopud offers different starting points for planning a trip: protected landscapes, paths, historic buildings, and recurring cultural events. When looking for hotels on Lopud, your travel dates are a useful starting point, since events take place in late summer and ferry times can vary seasonally.

Landscape, Bay, and Paths

Lopud Bay is designated as a particularly valuable natural landscape. The protected natural area includes various habitat types and the coastal belt; protection also includes preserving views of the historic center from land and sea. Lush Mediterranean vegetation characterizes the island.

A path leads from the settlement of Lopud to the sandy Šunj Bay on the opposite side of the island. There are also opportunities for walks along the coast. If you want to plan a walk to a specific destination, Šunj is the named endpoint; coastal walks offer a more general connection with the landscape. A walk with a destination and coastal strolls can therefore be considered different ways to explore the island.

Cultural History and Buildings

The Knežev dvor was built after the Principality of Lopud was founded in 1456; construction was completed in 1508. It is considered one of the region’s most representative examples of architecture from the second half of the 15th century. The restored complex showcases Dubrovnik’s maritime tradition. Check the current presentation details before visiting.

The historic Đorđić-Mayneri Park covers 13,027 square meters and is considered one of the most valuable examples of park heritage in the Dubrovnik area. Its size and historical significance give the park a distinct place among the island’s cultural sites.

The Church of Our Lady of Šunj dates from the 13th century and was expanded through the 17th century. It preserves parts of a polyptych from 1452 as well as an important altarpiece by Jacopo Palma the Elder. The Franciscan monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Grotto are also historic religious sites on Lopud. The Spanish fortress of Sutvrač dates from 1563.

Events, Cuisine, and Travel

At the end of August, the recurring Ponta Lopud Jazz Festival brings concerts, masterclasses, and workshops to the island. At the end of September, Ponta Lopud Book Bridge brings together writers, thinkers, and readers for talks and readings. Event programs change with each edition, so check the dates and program for the edition you want to attend.

Traditional Dalmatian dishes associated with Lopud include grilled fish, black risotto, and octopus salad. Menus vary between individual establishments. A ferry runs from Dubrovnik’s Gruž port to Lopud; the crossing takes about 50 minutes. Travel time and schedules may vary seasonally, so check departure times for your travel dates.

This gives you specific points of reference for planning, without combining cultural events and travel into a single itinerary.
