Lovorno’s cultural profile ranges from ancient water supply and churches to medieval burial traditions and a religious procession. Culinary offerings featuring wine, oil, and menestra complement these historical themes. This gives you two distinct areas to explore when planning your trip: cultural heritage and local cuisine.

Aqueduct and Church Site

Lovorno contains the best-preserved section of the Epidaurian water supply system. The complete surviving profile shows that the channel was covered by a vault. The ancient aqueduct runs through Lovorno between Ljuta and Pridvorje. The site of the Velika Gospa church lies near the aqueduct route and above a fertile field. Here, the history of engineering and sacred heritage meet in a specific geographical setting.

Churches and Burial Traditions

There are three churches in Lovorno: St. Anne, St. Elias, and Velika Gospa. St. Anne’s Church is in upper Lovorno and was built in the 16th or 17th century. This single-nave Baroque building has a bell gable, a porch, and an apse; it also has a cemetery. Single-nave means that the building has one nave.

Stećci depicting a shield and sword are associated with St. Elias’s Church in Lovorno. They belong to a medieval burial tradition that is generally dated to the 14th and 15th centuries in Konavle. Evidence of a different period can be found at Velika Gospa church: during the church’s reconstruction in the early 20th century, an ancient funerary stele was excavated there. The rectangular stele is made of limestone. The area around the church also contains tegula fragments and building materials. The two burial monuments represent different periods: medieval stećci on the one hand, and an ancient stele on the other.

Religious Traditions

Lovorno has two religious brotherhoods, dedicated to St. Anne and Velika Gospa. The procession to Velika Gospa is an old Konavle custom. At the 2025 celebration, the procession went from the parish church of St. Sergius and Bacchus to Velika Gospa church. If the procession is important to your trip planning, check the date and arrangements for the relevant year.
