Sveti Ivan: Hiking Trails, Churches and Traditions
Accommodation in Sveti Ivan
Sveti Ivan combines several hiking and cycling routes with two churches and local traditions. When choosing the village for your trip, it is worth first considering your planned focus: the hiking options differ in length, stated duration and route; cycling route 509 is a moderate loop.
Hiking Trails and Routes in Sveti Ivan
The Staza Sedam slapova starts in Sveti Ivan and is a moderate 15-kilometre circular hike with an estimated walking time of five hours. The loop leads from Buzet, near the Istrian Water utility, via Selca, Glistonija, Kuhari and Kotli, back to Buzet. The route includes seven waterfalls, woodland, abandoned villages and Kotli as an excursion destination; it also crosses Napoleon’s Bridge.
A steep section climbs 100 metres in elevation in less than a kilometre and is secured with steel cables. Water levels can affect this section. You enter and walk the trail at your own risk. Check trail conditions and local directions before setting out.
Another moderate hiking option is the 263 Oprtalj–Čepić Trail. It is 19.4 kilometres long, with a stated duration of six hours and thirty minutes. The route leads through fields and small woodlands towards Sveti Ivan, then back to Sveta Lucija. Compared with the Staza Sedam slapova’s 15 kilometres and estimated five-hour duration, this trail is 4.4 kilometres longer; its stated duration is an hour and a half longer.
At Put Biske, it is worth distinguishing between the cycling and hiking routes. The official cycling route 509 starts in Sveti Ivan and forms a moderate, 25.22-kilometre loop via Hum and Kotli. The Put Biske hiking trail starts in Buzet (Sv. Ivan) and leads via Sv. Križ, Cunj, Glistonija and Šćaveti to Hum. Another route is the 510 Rome Trail: it descends to Sveti Ivan, passes beneath the viaduct and continues to Buzet bus station. Before setting out on this trail, check the signage and access locally.
Churches and Cultural Connections
The Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1634. It has three masonry altars with wooden retables, or wooden altar structures. The main altar features wooden statues of St John the Baptist, St John the Evangelist and St Michael. The Church of St Mary Magdalene dates from 1325 and has a bell tower without a bell. The two buildings bring different historical dates and distinctive architectural details to a walk around the village.
A local tradition is Igra na ruh, a centuries-old horn-throwing game played along the road between Sveti Ivan and Most. According to local lore, the game began when millers reconciled after a long dispute over water for operating their mills. The dates may vary from year to year. Alongside the trails and churches, the focus is also on the traditional story of a game and its connection to the water used by the mills.
Another connection to the theme of Istrian beer is Bruman Craft Brewery, associated with the address Sveti Ivan 5 in Buzet. Local craft breweries and events are also among the topics associated with Istrian beer experiences.
