Municipality of Cerovlje: Churches, Trails and Traditions
Accommodation in Municipality of Cerovlje
The Municipality of Cerovlje is a sprawling municipality northeast of Pazin; its central settlement lies in a hilly landscape. There are several themes to choose from when planning your trip: medieval churches, traces of brickmaking, events rooted in regional tradition, and routes to explore on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the Municipality of Cerovlje, you can start by deciding whether culture, nature or a specific event date will shape your travel plans.
Churches and architectural history
In Draguć, you will encounter different chapters of architectural history. The Church of St Elijah is a Romanesque building from the late 12th century, constructed from two-coloured stone blocks. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in 1641. The history of the settlement is also marked by rebuilding: the former settlement was destroyed by fire during the Uskok War of 1615 to 1618; Draguć was subsequently rebuilt according to a precise plan.
The All Saints Church connects the settlements of Gradinje and was built in 1604. Beneath layers of plaster are frescoes and Glagolitic graffiti. In Cerovlje, the Church of the Holy Trinity dates from the 15th century and has remnants of frescoes from the time it was built. These details give each church its own distinctive feature: its period of construction, the materials used or the surviving paintings.
Gologorica also brings together several historical landmarks. Vela vrata was once the main gate. The De Franceschi house was built in 1711, while the Romanesque Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary has Gothic frescoes painted around 1400 by an unknown artist. In Paz, the remains of the castle can be seen on the hill above the settlement. Grimalda is a viewpoint in central Istria, on a hill 447 metres high; the Church of St George there dates from the 13th century.
Near Moloni, the Church of St Michael the Archangel has a Romanesque, semicircular sanctuary dating from the 13th century. Its furnishings include stone statues of St Michael, the Virgin Mary and St Joseph. The Church of the Holy Spirit stands by the railway station in Borut. A Glagolitic inscription above the entrance shows that it was restored in 1560.
Crafts and railway history
Borut also tells the story of a craft practised for centuries: brickmaking. Local people shaped clay from the Borut stream by hand and fired it in field kilns known as “frnaže”. The process links the material, the method and the local term to a concrete story of the trade.
Another part of the past concerns railway transport. When the railway line from DivaÄŤa to Pula was built in 1876, Cerovlje received a pumping station for steam locomotives. The locomotives were supplied with water and coal there. The church near the Borut railway station recalls a different year with its inscription: 1560, the year it was restored. Together, these places illustrate different historical themes, from crafts to railway supplies.
Ponds, hills and trails
The ponds of Cerovlje offer a green setting for walks or picnics. Above Pagubice, on Sveti Antun hill, there is a furnished picnic area. It can be reached via a hiking trail connecting Grdoselo–Zelengrad and Grimalda. When planning an outing, you can choose between spending time by the ponds and following a route that links several named places.
For cyclists, the “Trail of waterfalls” (614) climbs from Pagubice to Cerovlje and then continues towards Pazin. The “Path of St. Kocijan” starts at Borut railway station and is 13 kilometres long. When planning, the route via Pagubice and Cerovlje towards Pazin is the key detail for the cycling trail, while the Path of St. Kocijan starts at Borut railway station and is 13 kilometres long. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.
Traditions and event dates
A traditional carnival takes place in Cerovlje at the beginning of the year, featuring colourful parades of masked groups from central Istria. The dates vary each year. In Draguć, Bajs players gather for the annual “Z bajson u Draguć” on the third Sunday in June. In Pagubice, the gathering of traditional musicians “Nadalinu u pohode” takes place on 13 June. If you would like to plan a trip around one of these events, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
