The two routes therefore differ both in their listed length and in the type of activity. Check the latest route information before setting out.
Historic Town Layout and Buildings
Gračišće’s historic town layout is divided into neighbourhoods, each with its own square and church. It is listed in the Register of Cultural Property. Pod Fumiju, the historic artisans’ street, has retained its original appearance to this day. Beside the main gate stands the two-storey Salamon Palace, built from carefully hewn local stone. Its architecture combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. The Late Gothic Church of St. Mary na Placu was built in 1425 by Master Dento.
The surviving fortifications and buildings also offer tangible clues to the town’s history. Sections of the medieval fortification walls remain on the west, north and east sides. The Romanesque town gate also stands on the west side. The loggia, accessible through the town gate, dates from 1549. A round Renaissance tower dating from 1500 survives at the eastern corner. In the southern part of Gračišće are the ruins of the Brotherhood Church of St. Pangrac, built in the 14th century.
The Church of St. Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia houses a 15th-century statue of St. Vitus holding a model of the town. The Church of St. Euphemia dates from 1383. The Chapel of St. Anthony preserves the famous Gračišće Crucifix from the 18th century. Together with the neighbourhoods, squares and churches, these buildings represent different chapters of local history.
Wine and Maneštra
Culinary events also offer different reasons to visit. The traditional Izložba vina Gračišće takes place on Easter Monday, when visitors can sample the wines on display at local konobas. At the Festival istarskih maneštri, visitors can try various versions of Istrian maneštra prepared by cooking teams. Dates and arrangements for visiting the wine exhibition, as well as dates and programme details for the festival, vary from year to year. If you are planning to attend either event, check the information for that year’s edition before your trip.
