Debeljuhi and the Žminjka Cycling Route
Accommodation in Debeljuhi
Debeljuhi lies along the route of the official Žminjka Cycling Route. This lets you connect the place with a specific cycling tour when planning your trip. The wider destination of Općina Žminj offers additional route and cultural themes, broadening your perspective beyond Debeljuhi.
The Žminjka Cycling Route through Debeljuhi
The Žminjka runs along paved roads through Milanezi, Maraškini and Kršanci, and then through Debeljuhi. The official cycling tour is 23 kilometres long and rated moderate. The ride is estimated to take approximately two to three hours. Nine kilometres of the route are paved, and 14 kilometres are on gravel roads.
The length, approximate riding time and surface give you different points of reference for planning your tour: the time estimate indicates its approximate duration, while the breakdown makes the change in surfaces clear. Check the route conditions before setting out. Route details may change if the route is diverted or a surface is altered.
Cycling in the wider destination of Općina Žminj
For a broader perspective, take a look at central Istria: there are 21 organised and signposted cycling routes there. Frequent climbs and descents are part of the region’s character; the technically challenging terrain is considered a test for experienced cyclists. This is a different scale from the description of an individual route such as the Žminjka. The regional network of routes may also change as routes are added or adjusted.
Routes and landmarks in Žminj
Another route description in the wider destination of Općina Žminj concerns Route 761 Žminj–Feštini. Unlike the Žminjka, which passes through Debeljuhi, this route starts beside the tower of Žminj. It passes through the square in front of the parish church of St Michael and through the old town along the old stone street Štradi.
Žminj’s architectural history also offers specific points of interest for a cultural exploration. Žminj Castle was probably built with a square ground plan in the 15th century. Beside the castle stands the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, decorated in 1471 with works of art by an unknown artist. Today, only a smaller part of the citadel is visible, including one of the four round towers, a wing of the fortification, an outer section of the fortifications and a well-preserved public water cistern dating from 1863.
Calvary is in the western part of Žminj, near the road between Pazin and Pula. Built of stone in 1728, it consists of three crosses enclosed by a wall and secured by an iron gate. The castle, chapel, citadel and Calvary represent different aspects of historic architecture in the wider destination of Općina Žminj.
Festivals, guided tours and local traditions
Bartulja is a folk festival in Žminj with a tradition spanning at least a hundred years. It takes place on the last Saturday in August; future dates may change, so it is advisable to check before your trip. Bartulja includes a mass at the Church of St Bartholomew at the entrance to Žminj. The annual programme may vary in detail.
The Istrian Pasta Festival in Žminj aims to preserve and nurture the local tradition of Istrian pasta, promote indigenous pasta varieties and support their producers. If you are interested in regional food culture, the one-hour “Žminjska štuorija” guided tour also introduces you to different aspects of the place: the history and customs of Žminj’s residents, their language, and sacred and secular architecture. The tour also includes a tasting of specialities from local producers and a demonstration of how to prepare typical local pasta such as Makaruni and Fuži. The offer is seasonal; check the dates before your trip.
Various exhibitions are held in the tower of Žminj, including exhibitions of handmade nativity scenes, a small tower market and exhibitions about Bartulja. If you are planning a visit, check the latest opening details in advance.
