Castle and Churches in Žminj
Žminj Castle was built in the 15th century; its ground plan was probably square. A small part of the Žminj citadel is still visible in the Municipality of Žminj today, including one of the four round towers, a wing of the fortress, an outer section of the fortifications and the well-preserved public water reservoir dating from 1863. The fortified heritage also includes remains of the 15th-century walls.
The parish church of St Michael was built within the former fortress. One of the castle walls was reused for its side façade. North of the parish church stands the 15th-century Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity, which once stood free-standing within the castle. A chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity was added to the castle’s southern wall and painted in 1471. The Church of St Anthony the Abbot was built in 1381 by Master Armirigus; there are also several chapels decorated with frescoes.
Culture and Regional Traditions
The Čakavski Sabor is also part of Žminj’s cultural history. It was founded in Žminj on 8 May 1969 as a cultural and academic gathering, initially focusing on Čakavian poetry. This offers another perspective on the town’s cultural identity, alongside its churches and fortified buildings.
Bartulja is a folk festival with a tradition stretching back at least a hundred years. It is celebrated on the last Saturday in August around the Church of St Bartholomew. The tradition also includes a mass in this church at the entrance to Žminj. Check the dates before you travel, as future festival dates and the programme may vary.
The Istrian Pasta Festival in Žminj focuses on preserving and promoting traditional Istrian pasta and supporting local producers. The festival is held regularly; dates and the programme may change. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the information for your travel dates.
The one-hour Žminjska štuorija offers an introduction to the history and customs of local residents, their language, and the town’s sacred and secular architectural heritage. The programme is seasonal, so check dates and availability before you travel. The culinary elements may vary from one edition to another and include home-baked bread, demonstrations of how local makaruni and fuži are made, and a tasting of Žminj coffee.
