Karojba can be explored via a described hiking loop and a protected natural monument. The Quadruvium circular trail leads to several natural and cultural sites; the Four Pines add a distinctive feature to the landscape. The history of the churches also spans several centuries.

Quadruvium: Circular Trail and Attractions

The Quadruvium is an 11.5-kilometre circular route that starts in Karojba near the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is considered moderately difficult; the loop is estimated to take around two hours. The distance, difficulty and duration offer different points of reference for fitting the route into a stay.

The attractions along the Quadruvium include the Church of St Andrew, which stands beside the local cemetery. The route also passes the Badavca spring and several sinkholes: Sopajac, also known as Veliki dol, as well as Gavranik and Grabovac. The edge of Gavranik is dangerous.

The route information thus combines a specific time estimate with a series of named stops. Those interested in nature and historic buildings will find both along the described route, with the churches considered as part of the trail rather than separately from it. The Church of St Andrew is also a distinct point of reference for Karojba’s history.

The Four Pines of Karojba

Four stone pines with umbrella-shaped crowns stand on the road between Karojba and Pazin. They are protected as a botanical natural monument; they were granted protected status in 1966. Their location far inland, away from the sea, is also noteworthy. The trees provide a distinctive, tangible feature of Karojba’s natural heritage.

The wider destination of Općina Karojba also lists measurements for the pines: the oldest trunk has a circumference of 3.30 metres, and the tree is 14.5 metres tall. These measurements add to the picture of a natural monument whose protected status and location are already important points of reference.

Nature and Landscape in Općina Karojba

In the wider destination of Općina Karojba, Dolac Sopajac lies between Karojba and Vižinada, near Škropeti. It is considered the largest and deepest sinkhole in Istria. The terrain and vegetation make it difficult to reach the bottom. This limitation is part of the description of the site and should be taken into account when considering the landscape.

Valigaštar is a drinking-water spring near the hamlet of Močibobi. Its water has been used since Byzantine and Roman times. A Roman military camp was probably located near the spring in antiquity; Roman roads crossed nearby. The wooded hills around Valigaštar and Vrućak contain historic archaeological sites and have been inhabited since prehistoric times.

Churches and History in the Wider Destination

The Church of St Andrew in Karojba dates from the 13th century. It contains remains from the 8th century and stands on the site of a former Roman necropolis. Different periods of history thus come together in this building; the church is also one of the Quadruvium’s attractions.

Another church in Karojba is the single-nave parish Church of All Saints. It was built in 1580, extended in 1840 and 1913, and restored in 1986. Outside Karojba, in the wider destination of Općina Karojba, the Church of St Mary Magdalene in the hamlet of Konobari dates from the 12th century; its bell dates from 1607.

The Romanesque Chapel of St Nicholas in Rakotule preserves a different visual programme: its frescoes include Christ in Majesty, or the Maiestas Domini, as well as scenes from the legends of St Nicholas. The churches and natural areas of Općina Karojba offer different ways to explore the region’s history, while the circular trail and the Four Pines provide tangible points of reference for Karojba itself.
