When searching for hotels in Krsan, it helps to start with the place’s key themes: the castle, Glagolitic traces and regional traditions surrounding Krafi and wild herbs. This makes it possible to plan your stay around cultural, culinary or nature-based interests.

Castle and Glagolitic traces

The Kršanski kaštel stands on a hill above an open field. Its surviving features include a tall, four-sided tower and a courtyard with a cistern. The tower, courtyard and water reservoir give the complex a distinct architectural form and offer different details that reveal its design.

Krsan is also connected to Glagolitic heritage: a copy of the Istrian Boundary Agreement was found in the town, and Glagolitic inscriptions have been preserved in the Chapel of St Anthony the Abbot. These two references link a written discovery with inscriptions at a sacred site. Those interested in the region’s cultural history will find more here than a general account of ancient writing traditions.

Krafi and wild herbs

Krafi are among Krsan’s distinctive culinary themes. At KrafiFest, this traditional speciality is presented in sweet and savoury, boiled and baked forms. Krafi are pasta filled with cheese and are considered the best-known dish of the region. The 20th edition of KrafiFest was scheduled for 1 May 2025; by 2025, the festival had been running for two decades.

A Kršan cycling route also combines a ride with regional cuisine: it ends with traditional dishes featuring wild herbs and Krafi. This brings together two sides of the culinary tradition—the filled pasta and dishes featuring wild herbs.

The Wild Herbs Festival takes place annually in Kršan. Exhibitors present plant-based products, while chefs prepare and showcase dishes made with wild herbs. The workshops cover natural cosmetics, teas, tinctures, oils and fragrances. The programme thus includes both food and the processing of plants into personal-care products and aromatic goods.

A wedding tradition in nine scenes

Kršonski pir is a folkloric performance depicting a wedding custom characteristic of Krsan and its surroundings. In nine scenes, the performance follows the customs from courtship through engagement to the wedding. This sequence makes the progression of the custom—not just the wedding day as a single moment—the focus.

The wider destination of the Municipality of Kršan

The Učka Nature Park extends across the hilly part of the Municipality of Kršan. Its habitats are home to numerous endemic, endangered and protected plant and animal species. In Šušnjevica, the Ekomuzej “Vlaški puti” includes an interpretation centre and a media library. Themed walking trails pass through Učka Nature Park and are connected with the lives and activities of the local community. Nature and cultural interpretation come together here under a shared theme.

The Municipality of Kršan also includes an almost 13-kilometre stretch of preserved coastline. It is steep and rocky, with wild beaches in coastal inlets. This coastal landscape complements the municipality’s hilly areas with a different type of landscape, without implying any specific route or distance.

The historic buildings of the Municipality of Kršan also reflect different periods. Stari grad Kršan is a fortified town and one of the best-preserved castles in Istria; it was first mentioned in the 13th century. The 17th-century Church of St Anthony the Abbot stands within its walls. Kožljak Castle lies on the southern slopes of Učka, along the old route that connected ancient Histria and Liburnia; its first written mention dates back to 1102. The approach to the castle is marked by steps cut into the bedrock.
