Plomin combines a rich historical heritage with a location on a steep coastal slope. If you are looking for a hotel in Plomin, its buildings, the time of year and your planned activities can help you structure your stay. The townscape includes Romanesque churches, a significant inscription and defensive walls. There are also seasonal nature and cultural events, as well as hiking trails and a snorkeling spot accessible only from the sea.

Churches, Walls and the Plomin Inscription

The Church of St. George the Elder is a Romanesque church dating from the 11th century. It later served as the guild church of Plomin’s fishermen and seafarers. Its Romanesque bell tower is one of three surviving Romanesque bell towers in Istria. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as St. George the Younger, dates from 1474. Its furnishings include three Baroque altars, carvings, liturgical silver and gilded objects, as well as a fresco of the so-called Nursing Madonna. A town loggia was built nearby in 1650.

The fortifications also tell of different building phases: the historic town is surrounded by medieval walls from the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as Renaissance defensive walls from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Plomin Inscription is a different kind of record. The stone relief depicts the Illyrian-Roman god Silvanus and bears a later Glagolitic inscription. It is considered one of the oldest monuments in the Croatian language. Together, the churches, walls and inscription offer insight into different periods of Plomin’s history.

Nature and Recurring Events

Plomin lies on the slope of Plominska gora, whose limestone face drops almost vertically to the sea. In late May and early June, the endemic Istrian bellflower blooms around houses, the church, walls and baladurs. This seasonal nature theme is also reflected in the programme of the Istrian Bellflower Days, which includes talks, exhibitions, singing and music.

Another annual event is Bela nedeja, a traditional religious and folk festival in Plomin. It takes place on the first Sunday in October; the programme includes a Mass as well as entertainment and sporting events. The festival’s recurring product fair features cured meats, honey, chestnuts, cheese, crafts and local wines. The late-spring flowering season and the October festival thus offer different seasonal highlights for a visit.

Hiking Trails and Coastal Activities

Two different route descriptions are relevant for hiking. The Babino sklonište–Plomin stage is listed as 22.8 kilometres long, takes 8–9 hours and is classified as easy. For planning, both the difficulty rating and the stated duration are provided. The PP 722 trail starts at the D66 state road near Hotel Flanona at Vidikovac Plomin, climbs to Lanišče and ends in Sitodraž. For this route, the starting point, course and destination provide orientation.

The snorkeling spot at Rt Mašnjak below Plomin can only be reached from the sea, by boat or SUP. In nearby Plomin Luka, a coastal promenade follows the shore towards the beaches; the snorkeling spot lies several hundred metres farther on. This offers a different focus from the hiking trails: here, access is from the water, while the routes are described by stage duration or course.
