Oprtalj: Churches, Loggia and Routes Through Istria
Accommodation in Oprtalj
Oprtalj is situated on a plateau at the summit of a hill above the Mirna River, opposite Motovun. From here, the views stretch across Istria to the west coast. During your visit, you can explore the town’s history or follow routes through the landscape. In the 15th century, Oprtalj was a fortress that defended the Venetian border in Istria. Its historic buildings tell the story of different periods and functions.
Buildings from Different Centuries
The Loggia was built in the 16th century and now houses a lapidarium with stone fragments from Roman, medieval and later periods. From the Loggia, the view extends to the sea. This place thus brings together historical artefacts and a sweeping view.
Of the three gates within the town walls, only one remains; this town gate was reconstructed in 1756. The parish church of St. George stands in the centre of Oprtalj. Built in 1526, it houses valuable altars and paintings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. St. Rocco’s Church, built in the 16th century, is located at the southern entrance. Its frescoes depict saints and are attributed to Anthony of Padua.
Below Oprtalj stands the Church of St. Mary. Dating from the 15th century, it contains an Annunciation fresco by Klerigin of Koper, dated 1471. The churches and the Loggia each offer their own historical perspective, from the date of construction and furnishings to a single, dated work of art.
On Foot Through the Landscape
The Parenzana is a walking and cycling route promoted and used in the Croatian region of Istria; it passes through Oprtalj. There are also routes with a range of described features for walks around the town.
Hiking trail 263 Oprtalj–Čepić starts near Oprtalj. This moderately difficult route is 19.4 kilometres long and passes through open woodland, fields, grassland, scrub and green forest. The trail thus combines a clearly defined route with varied stretches of landscape.
Hiking trail 261 Toplice–Oprtalj–Toplice reaches Oprtalj along a forest path through an impressive gorge. Another way to approach the town on foot is from the former Oprtalj-Portole railway station: the steep uphill route takes about 40 minutes. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.
A Cycling Route Through Oprtalj
There is also a specific route for a bike ride: cycling route 4 passes through Oprtalj between Sv. Lucija and Martinčići. It is 39.3 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. Its length and difficulty provide a clear sense of what to expect, while the hiking trails offer further perspectives on the landscape.
Chestnuts and Kestenijada
Chestnuts feature prominently at Kestenijada, both in the food and in the cultural programme. Tastings include chestnut honey, rakija, cakes, bread and pasta, as well as chestnuts boiled or roasted over a fire. The programme also includes chestnut-themed exhibitions and talks, music and activities for children. The festival thus combines regional products with cultural and family-oriented events.
