Explore Grdoselo via its hiking trails, waterfalls and historical landmarks. Specific route details include a 16 km circular hike, a section of the Pazin–Grdoselo–Veliki slap route, and the Staza vodopada cycling route (614). The landscape is also shaped by the Grdoselski potok canyon and the Pećina Waterfall. The village’s history leads to Zelengrad, the Parish Church of the Holy Name of Mary and a manuscript from the parish archive. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the circular route, the route section and the canyon trail: they differ in their stated lengths, reference points and trail conditions.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The Grdoselo–Zelengrad hiking trail is a 16 km circular route. By contrast, the distance given for the Pazin–Grdoselo–Veliki slap route refers to a section: from a marked junction, Veliki slap is just over 1 km away; the trail then continues to a second waterfall. The details therefore compare a complete loop with a distance measured from a junction—two different bases for planning your trip.

The circular route offers panoramic views of the Pazin basin, Učka, Ćićarija, Grdoselo and Lake Butoniga. The Staza vodopada cycling route (614) passes through Grdoselo, leaves the village by the church and continues to a waterfall. So, alongside the hiking information, you can choose a cycling route and its point of reference in the village.

Canyon and Waterfalls

The Grdoselski potok river canyon features rapids, pools, remains of old mills and smaller waterfalls, including Črni puč. The canyon trail is unmarked and unsecured; it can become extremely slippery when wet. Check conditions before setting out.

The Pećina Waterfall is almost 20 metres high and cascades over a cave opening with a spring. The spring water is not drinkable.

Zelengrad and the History of Grdoselo

Zelengrad is an abandoned medieval settlement, first mentioned in 1102. The trapezoidal fortress stood on a hill; below it, the Grdoselo stream flows into the Butoniga stream. Thus, the specific historical details include the settlement’s history, the shape of the fortress and its position at the confluence.

Grdoselo Castle was never rebuilt and has since been known as Stari grad. The ruins of the Church of St. Anne were among the three churches in the old town of Zelengrad. This former settlement was located approximately 800 metres north of present-day Grdoselo.

The Parish Church of the Holy Name of Mary dates to 1774 and preserves the Grdoselo Fragment, a piece of Glagolitic cultural heritage from the 12th century. It was found in the ruins of the nearby Church of St. Anne. The fragment is therefore connected both to its findspot and to the parish church where it is kept.

Another historical record is the Grdoselo Chronicle, a manuscript from the Grdoselo parish archive. The local chaplain Vincent Pikot began writing it in 1688.
