Discover Pazin
Accommodation in Pazin
Pazin brings together cultural sites and nature experiences around Pazinska Jama and the Pazinčica Valley. When planning your stay, you can choose between historical sights, a signposted educational walking trail and weather-dependent activities organized in the cave. These different highlights offer ways to incorporate culture and landscape into your trip.
Pazinska Jama: Views and an underground adventure
Pazinska Jama is the chasm of the Pazinčica River; Pazin Castle was built above it. The chasm is about 500 meters long and about 100 meters deep. The cave is legally protected and designated as a significant landscape. This place brings together a striking landform and the historical connection to the castle.
An educational walking trail to Pazinska Jama begins at Vršić Bridge below the castle and is 1,100 meters long. It leads to the Piramida viewpoint, from which you can look down into the depths of Pazinska Jama. Information boards in several foreign languages are placed along the trail. The trail is maintained; check its condition before your visit.
The speleo adventure in Pazinska Jama offers a different perspective on the cave: its underground section is about 200 meters long and ends at a large chamber and an 80-meter-long underground lake. Visits are organized year-round by the Istra Pazin Speleological Society in cooperation with Natura Histrica, but are weather-dependent. As the arrangements depend on the weather, it is advisable to check the conditions for your planned visit in advance.
The Pazinska Jama Zipline is also among the activities described. It consists of four lines. The longest line is 280 meters long and reaches a speed of 50 km/h. The number of lines and the technical details help you distinguish the zipline from the cave and walking experiences.
The Pazinčica Valley
The Pazinčica Valley features cascades, waterfalls and small lakes. Some are suitable for swimming in summer. This seasonal limitation is important: some spots are suitable for swimming in summer, not all bodies of water or all seasons in general. The valley also attracts cyclists, climbers, walkers and anglers. There are different ways to enjoy nature here; the landscape features and activities mentioned can help you narrow down the focus of your stay.
Castle, museums and history
Pazin Castle houses exhibitions from the Ethnographic Museum of Istria and the Pazin Town Museum. The castle is mentioned in written documents as early as 983. Its exhibition spaces and early written mention make it a central subject in Pazin’s cultural history. If you are planning your stay around cultural interests, these details offer a concrete starting point without replacing the natural attractions around Pazinska Jama.
The Church of St. Nicholas and the Franciscan monastery offer further points of interest. The church is in the center of Pazin; brown signposts mark the way to it. A 45-meter-high bell tower was built beside the parish church in 1705. The Franciscan monastery has the oldest preserved library in Istria. The church, tower and library thus add further cultural and historical aspects of the town to the history of the castle.
