As a destination, Vela Traba combines nature conservation and landscape with links to road cycling and regional culture. At its heart is the Natura 2000 site HR2001322 Vela Traba. A collection of road cycling routes passes through the village between Tinjan and Škropeti. Nearby Beram is home to late Gothic frescoes, a cultural point of interest; cukerančići also received an award at Slatka Istra. If you are looking for a destination for your stay, these different themes can help you weigh up your interests.

Species Protection and Natural Environment

The protected area for the conservation of species and habitat types HR2001322 Vela Traba covers 540.0839 hectares. It is part of the Natura 2000 network under the Habitats Directive and protects seven designated species. The ecological network area HR2001322 Vela Traba lies within the settlements of Vela Traba and Beram, and partly in Brajkovići.

Vela Traba is particularly notable for its importance to the moth species Eriogaster catax: in the Mediterranean biogeographical region, it is one of only two areas of special importance for this species. Seven species are listed as target species for the ecological network area: Euphydryas aurinia, Eriogaster catax, Euplagia quadripunctaria, Lucanus cervus, Cerambyx cerdo, Elaphe quatuorlineata, and Morimus asper funereus. These include six invertebrates and the four-lined snake. For nature enthusiasts, the area’s designated species offer a specific point of interest alongside its habitat protection.

The area around the site includes a wooded canyon carved by the Draga stream, garigue and maquis, as well as meadows, agricultural land, karst sinkholes, and small villages. The landscape thus comprises a range of features: the wooded canyon, different types of vegetation, cultivated land, and settlements. Vela Traba’s natural character can be appreciated both through its designated species and through the diversity of the surrounding landscape.

Culture in Beram and a Culinary Connection

In nearby Beram, the Church of St. Mary on Ĺ kriljine preserves well-preserved late Gothic frescoes by Master Vincent of Kastav. The frescoes, which include a Dance of Death, were rediscovered and restored in 1913. The year refers to their rediscovery and restoration; the paintings themselves are late Gothic. This provides a cultural connection to Beram while clearly distinguishing the classification of the frescoes from the historical date.

There is also a culinary connection: at the Slatka Istra event, Mileva Pastorčić from Vela Traba received the award for the best cukerančići. This competition recognition for the pastry adds to the destination’s nature and culture themes.
