Gedići: Caves, the History of Technology and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Gedići
A trip to Gedići can bring a range of themes into your plans: agricultural technology, geology, caves and cycling. They differ significantly in character—from an exhibition of historic machines to underground experiences and a 51-kilometre circular route.
Agriculture and the History of Technology
Traktor Story explores the development of grain threshing before and after the mechanisation of agriculture. The exhibition traces the journey from the threshing floor to threshing machines, combine harvesters and tractors. On display are around fifty vintage tractors and agricultural machines in the original condition in which they were last used in the fields. You can also sample local produce as part of the exhibition.
Geology and the World of Caves
Speleo Gallery and Geological Column combines insights into geology, speleology and palaeontology with information about protected tourist caves in Istria and Croatia. The topics on display include unusual underground wildlife and traces of prehistoric human activity underground. The Geological Column shows the sequence of Istrian rock layers, from limestone formed 165 million years ago in a coral sea, through Cretaceous layers, to Terra rossa.
Baredine Cave is a karst phenomenon and a geomorphological natural monument. The guided tour lasts about 40 minutes and follows a 300-metre route through five chambers to an underground lake 60 metres below the surface. Along the way, you may see the olm, Proteus anguinus—a amphibian endemic to the Dinaric karst region.
Underground Activities
Speleolit is a rope-climbing training site. You can try cave-climbing techniques and explore the underground world there. Larger groups can take part in the climbing activities; individuals can use the open climbing wall. The guided Speleo Adventure offers a different approach: participants descend by lamplight, equipped for caving, into a world of stalactites and stalagmites. Climbing techniques and a guided caving experience are thus the focus of two distinct activities.
Cycling Route and Road Connections
Gedići is included in the 155 Giro di Parenzo. This easy circular route is 51 kilometres long and follows quiet roads through vineyards, olive groves and meadows. From Gedići, it continues on to Baredine. The distinction is useful when planning your day: Baredine Cave offers a tour lasting about 40 minutes, while the Giro di Parenzo is a 51-kilometre loop.
NC 056 connects ŽC 50046 with ŽC 5041 via Gedići and Parencani. The 1.75-kilometre connection consists of asphalt and gravel. NC 057 Baredine is a 750-metre gravel road connecting ŽC 5041 with Baredine Cave. NC 056 is longer and combines asphalt with gravel; NC 057 is shorter and consists of gravel.
