Flengi: Cycling Routes, Kontija Forest and Local History
Accommodation in Flengi
Flengi combines cycling routes with a nearby forest area and a local history that is easy to explore. This gives you several interests to consider when planning your trip: you can get to know the village by following a cycling route, include Šuma Kontija with its paths and picnic areas, or learn about the chapel and the area’s historical settlement phases. The features below can help you decide which of these to focus on during your stay.
Cycling routes through Flengi
The Maslinici, vinogradi i vrtovi Vrsara route passes through Flengi and runs from Vrsar via Sveti Lovreč, Dračevac, Fuškulin and Funtana, then back to Vrsar. It is considered suitable for a family outing. Another cycling route, Riznica baštine, also includes Flengi and runs from Vrsar via Kloštar, Sveti Lovreč, Hrvatini, Draguzeti, Barat, Mrgani, Poreč and Funtana, returning to Vrsar.
For mountain bikers, the Faragude Kontija MTB Tour is a third option. It covers 27 kilometres through Vrsar, Funtana and Flengi and is rated as moderate. A 22.9-kilometre section of the route runs on macadam. It also passes through disused sections of the active Kirmenjak quarry and connects to the regional St. Becic Bike Park. Route conditions may change, so check the current trail conditions before setting out.
The tours differ in the features that may be useful when making your choice: Maslinici is considered suitable for a family outing, Riznica baštine passes through a series of named places, and Faragude specifies its length, difficulty and surface. You can choose a route based on which of these details matters most to your plans.
Forest and trails nearby
Near Flengi, Šuma Kontija lies between Kloštar, Gradina and Flengi. The forest area covers 65 hectares. It has maintained hiking and cycling trails, as well as picnic areas. If you are planning a visit or a tour, check the current trail conditions, as they may change. Šuma Kontija has been designated a forest reserve since 1964.
The Mukaba hillfort in Kontija Forest also offers a cultural and historical connection to the surrounding area. It includes visible prehistoric dry-stone fortification remains. Forest trails and picnic areas sit alongside this tangible trace of earlier fortifications, allowing you to consider both nature and history as distinct interests when planning your trip.
Local history and the chapel
Flengi’s history includes several settlement phases. The village was associated with the estate of St. Michael in Kloštar. After plague epidemics, Flengi was later abandoned and resettled in 1541 by Croatian refugees from Dalmatia. The resettlement in 1541 is a specific date in the village’s history.
The Chapel of Our Lady stands on the boundary between the parishes of Fuškulin and Gradina. When it was blessed in 2011, it was seen as a sign of faith, an adornment to the village and a landmark for passers-by. Together with the history of resettlement, the chapel offers a cultural perspective on the village that differs from the cycling routes and forest area.
Culinary note
The taverns in Flengi are known as places to enjoy meat specialities. The specific selection may vary by venue and menu. If you would like to include this in your trip planning, it is worth checking the menu at the venue before visiting.
