The Municipality of Višnjan brings together astronomy, trails and sacred cultural heritage. Višnjan lies in western Istria at an altitude of 244 metres, between the Mirna River to the north and Lim Bay to the south. The old part of Višnjan sits on a hill; closely spaced stone houses and narrow lanes shape its appearance. A Baroque loggia on the main square is part of the historic centre. This makes it possible to explore the place through different interests: astronomy, a specific walking route or the history of small churches in several settlements.

Observatory and stargazing

The Višnjan Observatory is a public observatory, registered in 1992. Its scientific focus is on small bodies in the Solar System and their interactions with Earth. Group visits are available year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory talk on a scientific or astronomical topic and a guided tour of the observatory, the telescope dome and the Stone Circle. Weather permitting, an outdoor telescope observation is also included. For planning purposes, it is important to note that telescope observations are explicitly weather-dependent and groups must arrange their visit in advance.

Hiking trails and cycling route

The Venetian Lion Trail leads through historic Višnjan: from Antun Korlević Square, beneath the arch with the Venetian lion, to the old village of Barat and back. The route is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours. The marked Owl Trail is longer, at 7.7 kilometres, and is suitable for family hikes. It starts in a small pine grove near the Višnjan cemetery and leads to the landscaped Vena viewpoint. From there, you can see olive groves, vineyards and the sea.

The Star Trail offers a different kind of experience as a cycling route. It starts and ends in front of Višnjan Town Hall, leads to Tičan and offers views of the new observatory building with its telescope dome, as well as the Stone Circle installation. The route is described as easy and undemanding, and is suitable for families and recreational cyclists. The details of the two hiking trails allow you to compare their lengths: 7.7 kilometres for the Owl Trail versus 4.5 kilometres for the Venetian Lion Trail; an approximate duration is also given for the latter.

Churches and historic traces

The churches in and around Višnjan reflect different periods of construction and architectural details. In Cerion, the small Church of St Matthew was built in 1588. Its façade, with a bell gable and two bells, was renovated in 1935. At the entrance to Višnjan’s old town stands the Church of St Anthony the Abbot, dating from the 13th to the 15th century. It is known for its 14th-century frescoes and graffiti, including Glagolitic inscriptions.

Other historic churches are located in several places within the municipality: the Church of St James in Bačva dates from 1628 and was built on the site of an earlier church. In Markovac, the Church of St Helena of the Cross dates from the 14th century. The Church of St Pantaleon in Tičan dates from the 17th century and also stands on the site of an earlier church. The Church of All Saints, also known as the Church of St Mary Magdalene, dates from 1530 and is located in a cemetery. Together, these buildings offer different points of interest for those interested in local sacred history and its chronology.

Another local highlight

Wine is another possible focus of a stay: in Radovani, the renovated Radovan family winery welcomes visitors. Alongside the trails, astronomy and historic buildings, there are also other interests to choose from.
