Žgaljići Between MTB Routes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Žgaljići
Žgaljići is one of the Šotovento settlements that has preserved its original layout, with densely clustered stone houses. The settlement’s layout gives the place its own architectural character. The surrounding area also offers cycling and walking trails, as well as historical and cultural sites. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip combining outdoor activity and regional culture, you can take these highlights into account when choosing where to stay.
Cycling and Walking Trails Around Žgaljići
MTB Route 425, “U sjeni velikih hrastova,” passes through Žgaljići. This moderately difficult circular route is 20 kilometres long, with 377 metres of elevation gain. It runs from Milohnići through Brzac, Poljica, Žgaljići, Pinezići and Linardići, before returning to Milohnići. Along the way, asphalt and gravel alternate with old cart tracks and narrower, stony sections lined by dry-stone walls. The route therefore includes a variety of surfaces and trail types; its distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating also provide concrete points of comparison with other routes.
For walks, two trails with different difficulty ratings start in nearby Poljica: H128, “U sjeni velikih hrastova,” is an easy walk for the most part, covering 6.6 kilometres. H130, “Tragovima povijesti do Sv. Krševana,” is 7.2 kilometres long, is rated moderately difficult and passes through wooded natural areas with cultural heritage. Compared directly, H130 is only 0.6 kilometres longer, but has a different difficulty rating and combines nature and cultural themes. The cycling options mentioned also differ: B-430, “Udahnite Šotovento,” is an easy cycling route around Šotovento, while Route 425 is described as a moderately difficult MTB loop.
Cultural Sites and Architectural History
Route 425 links the section near Žgaljići with cultural sites around Poljica and in the western hinterland of Krk. These include the parish church of Sts Cosmas and Damian in Poljica. Its bell tower was built in the second half of the 18th century, is made of finely hewn stone, and is considered a distinctive landmark of the settlement. The route also passes the Chapel of St Sixtus between Pinezići and Linardići, as well as the church in Poljica. The route as described therefore passes several different religious buildings.
H130 reaches the Chapel of St Krševan above Čavlena Bay, which dates back to the 12th century. Its architecture is distinguished by an irregular trefoil-shaped floor plan, a vaulted central space and cross-shaped windows. The Church of St Krševan was built on the remains of an ancient rustic villa. Those interested in architectural history will find two specific points of interest here: the chapel’s distinctive interior shape and the earlier building on whose remains the church was constructed.
Glavotok also offers several points of historical and cultural interest. The Franciscan monastery preserves Glagolitic inscriptions and manuscripts. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary features Renaissance and Baroque elements. In addition, the island of Krk’s first printing press operated in Glavotok in the second half of the 19th century. These three themes are distinct: written records and manuscripts at the monastery, stylistic elements in the church, and the history of printing.
Nature and Regional Specialties
Near Čavlena stands an oak believed to be 400 years old. It is 20 metres tall, its crown measures 30 metres across, and its trunk circumference is more than five metres. These measurements describe the tree as a notable natural landmark in the area and add a connection to the landscape alongside the cultural stops.
In nearby Vrh, the House of Krk Prosciutto gives cyclists on Route B-427 the opportunity to sample Krk prosciutto. This Croatian product is registered at EU level. If you would like to plan a tasting, check its current opening arrangements before travelling.
