When looking for a hotel, Praputnjak is best understood through its cultural landscape and the development of the village. The Bakarski prezidi, the Karolina Road, and a short themed trail to ÄŚrni vrh each offer a different perspective: landscaped vineyard terraces, a settlement history along a trade route, and a walk with information about the landscape and flora. When choosing a destination, these themes can help you decide what kind of stay you are looking for.

Bakarski prezidi as a cultural landscape

The Bakarski prezidi are a terraced cultural landscape created and restored by local residents. Steep vineyard terraces lie on karst slopes; dry-stone walls and views of the sea are also part of this landscape. An interpretation area explains the site’s values. The Praputnjak-Dolčina area was designated cultural heritage in the 1970s.

The terraced landscape makes the shaping of the steep slopes visible; the role of local residents in creating and restoring them connects the landscape with the history of the village. To understand the site, it is worth distinguishing two things: the designation identifies the area’s cultural heritage status; the work of local residents describes how the terraces were created and renewed. This allows you to understand the cultural landscape both through its visible form and its significance.

The Karolina Road and settlement history

Praputnjak’s present-day settlement pattern reflects the arrival of the Karolina Road around 1730. Scattered hamlets lay around the Dolčina karst valley; they clustered together along the trade route. Service activities developed alongside agriculture. The road helps explain the village as a growing connection between settlement and work: its development involved not only the route of a trade road, but also the clustering of the hamlets and agricultural and service-related activities. This makes local history a different way of understanding the area than the Bakarski prezidi, where the shaping of the slopes is the main focus.

Two dates should be distinguished to put events in context. The Karolina Road arrived around 1730; this date relates to the development of the settlement pattern. The Praputnjak-DolÄŤina area was designated cultural heritage in the 1970s. The dates therefore describe two different things: the transformation of the settlement in the 18th century and its later cultural heritage status. They do not mark a single event, but place settlement history and cultural heritage in different contexts.

Themed trail to ÄŚrni vrh

A short themed trail climbs from the Bakarski prezidi to ÄŚrni vrh. Information panels cover the surrounding landscape and flora; there is also a dry-stone fortification associated with the ancient Liburnians. The walk has a different focus from the terraced cultural landscape: it highlights the natural environment, plants, and the fortification attributed to the Liburnians. If you include the trail in your plans, check its condition and signage on site.
