The Municipality of Jelenje brings together hiking and cycling routes with cultural themes ranging from milling traditions and folklore to memorial sites. When planning your trip, you can choose different areas of focus: an easy loop along a tributary of the Rječina, routes with specific elevation details, or recurring events throughout the year.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

A digital tour guide brings together six hiking trails to Planinarski dom Hahlić. The routes include descriptions, photos, video presentations and GPX tracks. Before setting out, check whether the digital guide is available. The municipality’s cycling network comprises nine routes with a total length of 170 kilometres. For a specific bike ride, it is worth checking the route details and distances again in advance.

The Šetnica uz Sušicu is an easy circular recreational trail of more than two kilometres along the Sušica tributary of the Rječina. The details for the Trnduro route in Jelenje offer a different kind of guidance: it comprises five stages and five climbs with a total elevation gain of 1,010 metres over 18.2 kilometres, as well as five descents with a combined length of 6.2 kilometres. The routes described can thus be distinguished by their layout and measurements: an easy loop in one case, and a staged route with specified climbs and descents in the other.

Rječina Canyon and Habitats

The Rječina Canyon covers 677.91 hectares within the Municipality of Jelenje. Conservation measures protect its aquatic and wetland habitats, as well as the biologically significant species found there. The canyon is therefore a distinct natural and scenic attraction alongside the routes described for hiking and cycling.

Events and Local Traditions

Every year, around 20 creatively designed carts take part in the Grobnička balinjerada, racing down a steep slope from Jelenje to the Sušica Bridge. The event has been held for more than 15 years in January or February; its date depends on the length of the carnival. Check the date for the year of your trip, as it is determined by the carnival.

On the first weekend after Epiphany, the Grobnički dondolaši traditionally parade through almost all the settlements of Grobinština in the municipalities of Jelenje and Čavle, ringing their bells. The route therefore crosses municipal boundaries. Dražice also hosts the international folklore event “Zakantajmo i zatancajmo po domaći va Jelenju” as part of Mihoja and Jelenje Municipality Day. This tradition has continued for more than two decades; check the specific dates and participating groups for the year of your trip.

Mills, Exhibitions and Memorial Sites

In Martinovo Selo, the Gašparov mlin watermill has been grinding wheat and corn for four centuries using the power of the Rječina. Visitors can learn how bread is made, from grain to loaf. You can also buy organic flour and see historic milling equipment, such as an old sieve. The mill, grain and bread connect the workings of the mill with a firsthand look at how grain is processed.

Margareta Krstić’s permanent exhibition in Dražice comprises 15 sculptures. They depict the lives and clothing of ancestors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dražice is also home to the Nebeski labirinti: nine stone structures arranged according to a special plan and associated with the planets and specific meanings. Visitors can walk barefoot over the stones. The Mlikarica monument in Dražice symbolises the Grobnik region and the hardships of life there in the past.

Each year, victims of Podhum are commemorated at the memorial site in Soboli. A monument in the memorial cemetery, featuring 91 shields, honours the residents of Podhum who were killed in July 1942.
