Klana brings together marked hiking trails, archaeological traces and religious traditions. The different routes are useful for planning your trip: the walk to Gradina takes 15 minutes, while the moderately difficult hike to Pliš takes two hours. There is also the Rebar hut as a place to rest, the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes and the traditional Gljivijada. You can divide your time between nature, history and local culture according to your interests.

Hiking Trails and Time Planning

The easy, marked Klana–Gradina hiking trail takes 15 minutes and leads to the remains of a medieval fortress at an elevation of 628 metres. The moderately difficult Klana–Pliš hiking trail takes two hours and leads to the scenic summit of Pliš at 933 metres. The two routes differ in duration and difficulty, as well as in their destinations: one focuses on fortress ruins, the other on a summit.

There are at least 13 marked and maintained hiking trails in the Klana area, leading through dense forests and peaceful meadows to scenic summits and historical sites. Numerous well-maintained cycling and walking paths also pass through the green countryside. Another named hiking trail is Klana–Kastav: it starts at Taverna Klana and runs through the forest along the Rojno Valley to Škalnica. Check the latest route information before setting out, especially if the stated duration determines your day’s plans.

Gradina and the Liburnian Limes

The Gradina archaeological site lies just above the centre of Klana. Its strategic location was first used in the 3rd century AD, in Late Antiquity, as part of the Liburnian Limes, a system of observation posts, fortifications and walls. The hiking trail leads to the remains of a medieval fortress; its strategic use as part of the Limes, however, dates to Late Antiquity. Two distinct historical periods therefore meet at the destination.

The Rebar Hut in the Forest

In the Stara Rebar forest stands a road-keeper’s hut several centuries old, built on the model of an Istrian Kažun. A Kažun is a type of house from Istria with a distinctive construction style. The Rebar hut serves hikers and other passers-by as shelter or a place to rest, and is also a destination for nature lovers. The terms refer to different aspects: Kažun describes the architectural model, while road-keeper’s hut describes the building’s former function.

Chapel and Procession

The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1904 at the place where, according to local tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Martin Ĺ ustar in 1903. Thus, according to local tradition, the event is dated to the year before the chapel was built. Every year on 15 August, a procession travels from Klana to the chapel, followed by a Mass in front of it. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with this date, check the specific details of the event before travelling.

The Gljivijada: Mushrooms, Cuisine and Culture

The traditional Gljivijada in Klana features a mushroom exhibition, talks about mushrooms, tastings of mushroom dishes, an accompanying cultural programme and a mushroom cooking competition. The programme brings together mushroom knowledge and culinary themes with cultural contributions. If you are planning your trip around the Gljivijada, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition.
