Liganj offers two starting points for planning your trip: hiking a route in UÄŤka Nature Park and attending the seasonal Marunada festival. The hike can be assessed in terms of duration and difficulty; the festival showcases chestnuts and their many preparations. The route and the seasonal event therefore appeal to different travel interests.

Hiking from Liganj towards Vojak

The hiking route from Lovran to UÄŤka Nature Park passes through Liganj, which is identified as a starting point. It reaches Liganj after about 45 minutes of uphill walking. From there, it continues via GrnjaÄŤ, Vrata and Sedlo to Vojak. The route is 7.4 kilometres long in total and is rated as moderate.

The time estimate refers to the ascent to Liganj, while the 7.4 kilometres indicate the length of the route. The two figures therefore describe different aspects of the hike. Trail conditions can vary by season; take this into account when planning.

Marunada and chestnuts

Marunada takes place in Lovran and the nearby villages of Liganj and Dobreć. The offerings include roasted chestnuts, chestnut dishes, cakes, desserts and other local preparations. The festival itself is seasonal; the local chestnut tradition behind it is enduring. Marunada therefore showcases not only individual sweet treats, but various forms of chestnut cuisine.

Dates and programme may change. If Marunada is important to your travel dates, check the current festival dates and programme before booking.

More to explore in the wider destination of Općina Lovran

In the wider destination of Općina Lovran, the chestnut trail runs above Liganj on the slopes of Učka; it climbs from Lovran towards Vojak. The Slap educational trail starts in Lovranska Draga and leads to a waterfall on Učka. It passes through a sweet chestnut forest, and information panels provide details about an endemic plant species. Lovranska Draga lies on a steep mountain ridge, 360 metres above sea level and within Učka Nature Park.

Cultural history in Općina Lovran

The architectural history of Lovran also offers specific points of reference in time. The Church of St George was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style; its sanctuary is decorated with 15th-century frescoes. In Lovran’s old town, the Church of St John the Baptist stands on the foundations of an earlier place of worship dating from the 12th century. Frescoes inside depict scenes from the life of the saint. The construction period and paintings thus point to different historical layers.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is the oldest preserved monument in Lovran. The town tower is the only surviving remnant of the former fortification system; Stubica is the only original town gate still standing. The gate once connected Lovran with its harbour. The small harbour of Mandrać was the centre of the town’s economic activity.
