Nature and trails around Ravna Gora
The Plodovi gorja educational trail is short and, with its gentle climb, suitable for the whole family. Information boards share insights into the vegetation of Gorski kotar, including trees and shrubs as well as mushrooms, medicinal plants and berries. The trail combines physical activity with insights into different plant groups, without requiring you to focus on a single nature theme.
The trails to Javorova kosa also offer specific reference points. The Ravna Gora–Javorova Kosa route, listed by HPS, has a stated walking time of 0.45 hours. A walk to Javorova kosa reaches a mountain hut after about 2 km. A viewpoint is 150 m from the summit of Javorova kosa and offers a view of the summit of Medvednica. The Božji studenac spring lies below the mountain hut. A local healing legend associates it with eyesight; it is part of local tradition.
The Frankopan Trail begins in Stara Sušica, near Stara Sušica Castle and the “Velike zvijeri” Visitor Centre. It follows the former Karolina Road towards the oldest part of Ravna Gora and Javorova kosa. Its historic connection to the road gives this trail a different point of reference from routes described mainly by their walking time or distance.
Two cycling routes have specific distances: MTB Route 762, “Following the path of berries,” starts in Ravna Gora and is 33.5 km long. Road Route 761, “Rivers of life,” also starts in Ravna Gora and covers 66 km. The different distances help you gauge the length of these two cycling options. They are part of a wider network of marked walking, hiking and cycling trails in the Ravna Gora area.
Castles, churches and cultural themes
Stara Sušica Castle is a Frankopan castle set in a centuries-old coniferous forest in Gorski kotar. It was restored in the romantic style of its time. The castle includes a church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. Ravna Gora is also home to the Church of Saint Teresa of Ávila: it was originally built in 1777 and renovated in 1907 to plans by the architect Hermann Bollé. The histories of these two buildings offer different points of reference for exploring the architectural heritage.
Other religious sites include the Church of Saint Vitus in Kupjak and the Chapel of Saint Roch in Šije. The Camino Gorski kotar also passes churches: in the Ravna Gora area, it passes the Chapel of Saint Florian, built in 1874; in Stari Laz, it passes the Church of Saint Stephen the King, built in 1912. These dates place the buildings in their historical context, while the Frankopan Trail follows a historic transport route along the former Karolina Road.
The “Iz bakine škrinjice” festival promotes and preserves cultural and historical heritage. The Festival of Chamber Music is part of the Kulturna jesen programme. “Dani plodova gorja” is considered an educational eno-gastronomic event. These events have different emphases, from inherited cultural heritage and chamber music to food and the pleasures of dining. When planning, check the dates of the events that interest you.
More experiences and seasonal activities
At the “Velike zvijeri” Visitor Centre in Stara Sušica, visitors can learn about bears, wolves and lynxes. A multimedia exhibition evokes the atmosphere of a forest environment. The centre offers a way to learn about these same animal species through an exhibition and educational displays, while the Plodovi gorja educational trail focuses on plants and vegetation.
In Kupjak, Sanjkalište Gorski sjaj is a family-friendly winter facility with a conveyor belt. The complex also has a hut serving food and hot refreshments, as well as a lounge area. These visitor facilities may vary seasonally; operating conditions and snow cover may also differ. Before visiting in winter, check the latest conditions.
Whether you are interested in a short educational trail, a stated walking time, a longer cycling route or historic buildings, each of the options described has its own focus. You can shape your trip around the themes that appeal to you most.
